News from Mrs Kelly

From the Principal

2024 Ironside State School Captains

Hi Everyone,

Congratulations to our elected Student Leaders for 2024 and what a beautiful ceremony that was this morning.  Thank you so much to everyone who attended and I must give shout-outs to Mr Brett Perrier who oversaw the organising  -  it was very fitting.  I really look forward to getting to working closely with our student leaders this year.  These same children went along to the National Young Leaders Day and I have no doubt they heard some inspirational speakers sharing their wisdom on leadership.  Thank you to Mr Nick Trethan and Mr Bryan Chow who accompanied them.  I would also like to acknowledge the plethora of children in our school, who are unbadged leaders in our school every day, conducting themselves in ways that make the world a better place and setting an example for all.  In keeping with the theme of leadership, I want to congratulate those children involved in the Bridge Builders Mediation Program.  Conflict, unfortunately, is an inevitable part of life and we need to develop our conflict resolution skills.  I really appreciate that Ironside State School has invested into the ethos of developing conflict resolution skills in our school community.

2024 Ironside State School Leadership Team

Student Council and P&C

We had two big ticket items this week; our first School Council meeting and our P&C AGM, followed by our general meeting.  I must say thank you to Mr Rob Wootton, Meg Breen and Andrea Strachan for the contributions they have made as members of the School Council.

Consequently, we are now looking for new members for our council.  Please keep your eyes out for the nomination forms which are being sent out today  -  we need you!

Thank you so much to everyone who turned out for the P&C AGM and first meeting!  There was such a lot of love and support for Ironside State School in the room.  Thank you to our outgoing executive committee, we really appreciate all you have done for Ironside State School.  Congratulations to our incoming executive committee  -  thank you for this commitment to your children’s education!  I look forward to working alongside with everyone to keep Ironside State School constantly improving!

Our Executive are:

President:  Tugrul Durali

VP OSHC:  Jacqui Romero

VP Fundraising:  Phoebe Anderson

Secretary:  Michael Archbold

Treasurer:  Matthew Chung

Assistant Treasurer:  Sonja Bennetto

I spoke to everyone at the School Council and P&C Meeting about the preliminary findings of the School Improvement Tool and along the way, people have asked me about this tool.  It is an international tool and I cannot speak highly enough about it.  Feel free to read it yourselves.  Here is the link.

Upcoming Events

Coming up this fortnight:

  • Prep -  2  Merit Assembly  -  Friday 8 March
  • Year 1/2 Choir Performance -  Friday 8 March
  • Parent Teacher Meetings begin in Week 8, from Monday the 11 March
  • Year 3 & 5 NAPLAN begins in Week 8 from Wednesday 13 March
  • Year 3-6 Merit Assembly -   Friday 15 March

Yes, it is that time of year when NAPLAN rolls around.  NAPLAN is not something to fear, it is simply a point-in-time test.  I encourage everyone to really work to support your children by not focusing too heavily on it in conversations.  The best thing we can do, like every day, is work to have our children well-rested, well fed and happy.  This is the best preparation for NAPLAN.  I have no doubt our Year 3 and 5 children will be just fine.  If you do have concerns though, please do not hesitate to contact our school.

Thank you to our teachers for taking the time to have parent/teacher meetings.  It is such a gift to hear our your children are progressing and I sincerely hope you all can make it.

Have a safe and wonderful week everyone.

Yours in education,

Angie Kelly

Principal

News from Mr Weston-Murdoch

Dear parents and caregivers,

Bridge Builders - Skill of the week: Feelings and Calming down

Children do choose their behaviour but they do not choose their feelings, and it is their feelings and thinking that influence them the most. This highlights the importance of teaching children to understand their feelings and to be given skills in calming down.

If your child sees you expressing your feelings in a positive way, over time they learn to do the same. Be sure to model appropriate ways to express feelings to your child. Children are like sponges – they soak everything up.

Our thinking can change our feelings, behaviours and the words we say. Listening to our self-talk and thoughts when we are upset and avoiding unhelpful, toxic thoughts and instead thinking helpful positive thoughts can be a very powerful calming tool.

LEARNING AND TEACHING - HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (CURRICULUM)

At Ironside, students are active participants in the learning process. They develop an understanding of how they learn through the learning assets.

During the course of a busy term, students are:

Through this understanding, students are equipped with skills and dispositions that position them well as lifelong learners.

Around the classrooms - Prep

In Prep A this week we have been learning about nursery rhymes. We learnt about Incy Wincy Spider, Humpty Dumpty and Hey Diddle Diddle. As a class we have discussed characters in the nursery rhyme and the sequence. We also discussed our likes and dislikes in the rhyme. For Incy Wincy Spider we have created our own little spiders on climbing up a waterspout.

In our phonics program we have been learning a range of sounds letters make. Some examples of letters we have completed are ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘t’, ‘n’, ‘e’ and ‘h’ just to name a few. During the learning process of phonics students create an artist representation for the letter.  For the letter ‘e’ we created our own fried eggs frying in a fry pan.

Around the classrooms - Year 1

In Year 1 we have been busy creating art masterpieces about ourselves. We have done some fantastic self-portraits using oil pastels as well as silhouette collages using magazine cut outs.

We are also learning how to be great listeners by using our whole body to listen when others are speaking. We can’t wait to share our personal recount later this term.

Around the classrooms - Year 2

Over the past couple of weeks, 2E have had such a wonderful time celebrating Chinese New Year. We made colourful Chinese lanterns and decorated them in bright jewels. Last Friday, we had a special visitor in our room, who taught us all about Chinese New Year. We got to play with traditional instruments and dress up in costumes.

Kind regards,

Scott Weston-Murdoch
Deputy Principal P-2

and the P-2 Team

News from Mrs Cowan-Dillon

Dear families,

It is hard to believe that it is the end of week six already!

It has been a busy term and I have been so impressed seeing the fantastic learning that has been occurring across years 3 and 4.

Congratulations to our upper school Ironside STAR recipients for February.

Around the classrooms - Year 3

The art studio is coming alive with colour as Year 3 students begin to finalise their ‘Blue Dog’ paintings. Inspired by George Rodrigue’s pop icon Blue Dog, who began as a Cajun werewolf dog – the loup-garou, our Blue Dogs are anything by scary and fierce. Students have explored how colour choices by artists help to position the audience to feel towards the subject of our artworks. Our Blue Dogs have personality plus, and our audience should be able to see our Blue Dog’s fun and cheeky exploits straight away. In the coming lessons, we will refine our little canine friends before completing our artist statement.

Around the classrooms - Year  4

On Wednesday the 14 of February, the Year 4 students had some special guests from Surf Life Saving Queensland come in to share their knowledge of how we can all stay safe at the beach. Although this knowledge is already essential when living in South East Queensland, this also relates heavily to our Semester 1 Digital Technology unit.

The friendly and knowledgeable lifesavers began by teaching us about the various flags we find at the beach, and what they all mean.

Then we learnt about the importance of looking for signs when at the beach. These could indicate dangerous animals, or dangerous water conditions.

Finally, the Year 4 students explored what the lifesavers do to ensure our safety, and what we as swimmers and beach goers can do if we find ourselves or others in danger.

Thanks SLSQ!

Kind regards,

Alice Cowan-Dillon

Deputy Principal 3-4

Bridge Builders

Our Bridge Builders have started to work with our younger students during our first break this week. It’s great to see these leaders teaching our students the conflict resolution skills they have been trained in. Remember, keep a look out for our blue vested heroes on duties around the school. They are there to help.

Parent Teacher Interviews - Week 8/9

These interviews are wonderful opportunities to continue to strengthen the partnerships between the school and home, creating the best environment for our students to learn. I look forward to wandering around the Year 5 and 6 classrooms during this fortnight and catching up with many of you during this period.

Have a lovely weekend!

Kind regards,

Student Sign Out Procedure

Dear Parents,

Please see new procedure for signing out students at Ironside State School below.

All contact requesting a student to be released early from class must be communicated directly with the office.

This can be in one of the three following ways:

  • In Person – By coming to the front office. (Office staff will contact the teacher via phone, or put an announcement out over our PA system)
  • Via Phone – 3258 3111
  • Via Email - absentstudents@ironsidess.eq.edu.au

Students can only be released from class once a parent is in the lobby of the front office.

This will allow the office staff to communicate with the teacher on that class that day and will ensure consistency around early student departures at Ironside.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation around this key piece regarding child safety.

Important Term 1 Dates

News from Chappy Thu

Dear Families,

For those who don’t know, chaplaincy is a community funded role, which means that the continuation of chaplaincy services is reliant on a variety of sources, including generous donations from individuals, the P&C, the school, government grants and of course, fundraisers. Our first fundraiser for the year will be the much loved Ironside Movie Night to be held on Saturday, 23 March. Our poster this year was created by Maria, our wonderful Spanish and Health teacher – Thank you so much Maria!

It will be a fun night for the whole family with pizza, slushies, popcorn, lolly bags and glow sticks. Students excitedly came to Chappy Central over the past two weeks to vote for a movie and as you can see, the winner was Trolls World Tour. Tickets will be on sale via QKR! from Monday, 4 March. And don’t worry, if you aren’t able to make it on the night, but would still like to support chaplaincy, you can do so through the voluntary donation tab under the Movie Night section.

Lastly, if you would like to volunteer at one of our fun areas on the night, please email me at tklet0@eq.edu.au. There are a variety of roles that require as little as 30mins of your time to the whole night. You are welcomed to volunteer for as long or as little as you like, simply let me know an area of preference & the amount of time you have available. Thank you so, so much! Events like this cannot happen with your support!

Chappy Squad

I am so proud of the Squad for settling into their new roles and routines so effortlessly! Ironside students, especially those in the Squad, never fail to impress me with their creativity, enthusiasm and dedication to the things they love.

Special thanks to the following members for their outstanding contribution to the activities and school over the past two week:

  • Eva, Kelly, Ella, James, Alice and Hafsa for giving up their time outside of school hours to help me make Origami instructional videos for Origami Club. They were all so thoughtful in their cover and thank you designs and spoke confidently on each of their videos. I was proud of them for learning new folds and the encouraging words and tips they shared on their videos to help others with tricky folds like the reverse fold! Together, we now have videos for a gift box, fish, swan, water lilly, pajrito and masu box. I look forward to sharing the videos once the series is complete
  • Anna, Camilla, Arnika, Kelly, Ella, Eva, Jay Jun, Het, Victoria, Tanmeh, Isabella, Alice, James, Xavier, Maya, Luna, Ann, Cooper, Esther, Lucrezia, Meeka, Thahira, Emmy, Sara, Emma, Mehr, Lola and Hafsa for consistently stepping up to the challenge of any role they take on. From Sign In to Games to leading the prep students…your efforts were seen, not just by me but by other staff who told me how impressed they were with you also! Well done!
  • Thanks to the initiative of James, suggesting and offering to take on more duties during pack up time, I decided to start a ‘Pack Up Crew’ to put away badges, change signs, vacuum and wipe down tables. I was always taught to take care of my environment, both inside and out, since an uncluttered space also leads to an uncluttered mind. So thank you James for the suggestion and thank you to Eva, Cooper, Ella, Het, Alice, Tanmeh, Victoria, James and Xavier for volunteering to be part of our first ever Pack Up Crew!
  • Sarah, Emma, Mehr, Kelly, Tingran, Esther, Meeka, Tahlia, Stasiya and Anna for representing the Squad in the Prep Area for Bubbles and Parachute games. Your energy, kindness and organisational skills were much appreciated by staff and much loved by the enthusiastic preppies!
  • Emmy and Lola for doing such a great job in our outdoor area. You set up, packed up, organised games and were so inclusive of all the students who wanted to join. You certainly kept your cool despite the heat!
  • Clara and Alisa for organising super fun drawing competitions on the white board. Thank you girls!
  • Lastly, I wanted to acknowledge a few Squad members who came to speak to me this fortnight about choices they made they weren’t proud of, or mistakes they felt bad about or simply coming to let me know that they felt terrible for forgetting to come to jobs they signed on for. Although I won’t name them, I want them to know that I am proud of them for having the courage to speak up and for talking to someone. We are all human and we all make mistakes sometimes (even me!). I hope all students know that one mistake will never define them as a person and that mistakes actually provide us all with opportunities to learn and grow.

Here are the top members and teams as of Week 5:

Chappy Activities

Chappy Activities were filled with excitement and fun over the past fortnight! In Origami Club, we made Fish with Eva and Gift Boxes with Kelly. Thank you for your wonderful videos and for all the time you spent helping everyone complete their origami projects. At the Scavenger Hunt, we learnt fun facts about libraries for Library Appreciation Week and Dr Seuss for Dr Seuss Day! Congratulations to our winning team members, Valentine, Ella, Jay Jun, Christopher, Ann, Cooper, Victoria, Tanmeh, Isabella and Alice! Thank you Ms Sauvage for the beautiful photos from the library of squad members deep in research, solving the Scavenger Hunt clues! Thank you also to Ms Sauvage and Ms Roche for the amazing work they do, each and every day in our outstanding library - We are so lucky to have you both! It was finally was sunny on a Friday for the first time this term and everyone was excited for the return of Bubble Friday!

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting a brand new cake store called Pick A Cake in Hamilton, owned and operated by the family of Chappy Squad member, Lillian. It was a beautiful space with so many delectable treats to choose from! My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our selection of cakes, cookies and treats. Thank you so much for the invitation!

Lastly, believe it or not, holidays are only 4 weeks away! These holidays, I will be volunteering at Riverlife Baptist Church’s Reach Out Program where students and their families will have opportunities to serve the community across 4 days. One of the days is dedicated to supporting chaplaincy and Ironside SS will be one of the schools on the list!

So, if you are free on Thursday, 11 April (second week of holidays), feel free to sign up to help for an hour or two between 9:00am and 12:00pm. We will preparing resources for Term 2 as well as some working bee tasks around the school like painting benches or weeding for the benefit of our whole school. However, as full disclosure, since the program is run by a church, there may be praying or mentions of God at some point in the day. If this doesn’t conflict with your values or beliefs and you would still like to help out, I would love to see you there on any of the days, but especially the day dedicated to our beautiful school.

And that’s all from me for now.

Until Next Time,

Chappy Thu

Title of authorised program: Catholic RI

A variety of curricula can be used approved by the local parish priest or a bishop which usually go into some detail about Catholic religious tradition and practices rather than a general instruction on the Bible and basic Christian beliefs provided in a co-operative arrangement. Christian RI may involve a variety of up-to-date teaching methods including storytelling, prayer, music, drama, craft, activity books, games, quizzes, video clips and puppet shows. Program resources are written by professional educators and are age-appropriate.

Title of authorised program: Islamic RI

Outline of your Faith Group’s Aims and Goals

Our vision is for children to gain foundational knowledge and a practical understanding of Islamic values. Islam is a complete way of life that is centred around the concept of God-consciousness, as shown by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the final prophet and messenger sent by Allah (God).

We aim to develop students into happy, healthy and functional individuals who contribute to society based on the timeless wisdom from Islamic scripture and insights from the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his family and companions. As the modern age takes its toll on everyone through various stresses (economic, political, social, cultural), our program is tailored to help them manage and rise above the modern day struggles whilst ensuring they remain true to the core ethics of One God, his final Prophet, and the development of a tolerant, value-based society as encouraged by Islamic scripture.

Outline of lesson structure

Our modern pedagogical approach enables us to deliver a curriculum structured around the foundational areas (6 Pillars of Faith) of Islamic education, including:

Term 1: Back to Basics: 5 Pillars of Islam

Term 2: Who is Allah (SWT)?

Term 3: Guidance through the Prophet Stories

Term 4: Guidance from Allah

Understanding that actions are linked to beliefs. Faith must be accompanied by beneficial action. There is no rote-learning; instead, concepts are taught in a dynamic and engaging way that is relevant to the Australian context. Students are encouraged to ask questions as this shows they are processing the lessons and seeking a deeper understanding.

Alongside faith-based lessons are practical steps to develop life skills like time management, maintaining healthy relationships, and respectful communication. There is also a focus on morals and values that are the basis for a harmonious and socially cohesive society. Principles of fairness, equity, sharing, respect and understanding are core to each lesson, which resonates with all students regardless of how strongly they identify with the faith.

Please note: The order of topics is rotated every year; however, the concept remains the same. To stay up to date with our Term Assigned topic. Please feel free to explore our website: https://www.isre.org.au/resources/

Title of authorised program: Buddhist

Aims and Goals

Our vision is for children to gain a foundation in Buddhist ethical values, being aware of the consequences of what they think, say and do. This will help them to develop skills that will benefit their personal lives and therefore also the wider community and society.

Our aim is for the children to lead happy and healthy lives by sharing values and life skills with them based on the wisdom of the Buddha and using contemporary pedagogy.  The children will not remember the contents of Buddhist text books, nor remember lists, but will understand the heart of Buddha’s wisdom to live well for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Outline of lesson structure

We employ a modern pedagogical lesson planning structure, using a logical, step-by-step approach, taking into account the current level of understanding of the children. In other words, age-appropriate.
