Acknowledgement of Country

Ironside State School acknowledges the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects to the Elders past, present, and emerging for they hold the traditions, culture, memories and hopes of Indigenous Australia.  The Turrbal Aboriginal Nation, who spoke the Jagera Language, roamed these lands.

News from Mrs Kelly

From the Principal

Hi Everyone,

Congratulations Chamber Strings and Mrs Trudy Weekes who were in the FANFARE State Finals last week  -  WOW!!  The 5 schools who performed are the top 5 in the state and they were simply extraordinary!  The dedication, hard work and passion that has gone into getting to this level leaves me stunned, not to mention the astounding talent.

Our Chamber Strings did not take out the prize, but nothing can take away from this achievement! There is an excursion coming up for some of our students to see the Queensland Symphony Orchestra soon, I wonder how many Ironside students will be part of it in the future?  Congratulations again you SUPERSTARS!

Happy Book Week!  Reading is magic!  One of my favourite quotes of all time is by Stephen King when he said, ‘Books are portable magic!’  We are looking forward to a great week, especially our Book Week Parade this Wednesday at 9:20am.  Come and watch the magic!  Big thanks to our librarians, Ms Cath Roche and Ms Annika Sauvage, as well as our Events Committee led by Ms Sharyn Pinkerton, for leading us to love books even more!  I am actually going on long service leave for a week, starting on the day of the parade; this leave has been planned since last year.  Mr Scott Weston-Murdoch will be the principal whilst I am away, and I thank him in advance.

Our P&C Meeting is tomorrow night (Tuesday 20 August at 6:30pm) and I urge you to come along and be part of it and become a member, if you aren’t one already.  This is a very valuable way to be a part of your child’s education and school.  A highly functioning P&C adds enormous value to a school; be part of it.

At our last P&C Meeting I let everyone know that our Enrolment Management Plan has officially been changed.  You can see these changes on our website.  Families will no longer be asked to leave our catchment if they move out of it.  Our catchment borders remain the same but there may be some scope for out-of-catchment enrolments.  Check our website for the details

Congratulations to all of our 3-6 Merit Certificate recipients!  You make your families and our school proud!

Next week Parent/Teacher meetings begin.  I am hoping you have signed up to have a meeting with your child’s teacher to hear all of the wonderful things that your child has been doing and what their next steps might be.  Parent/Teacher meetings are another great way to be involved in your child’s education.

We have Haga Elementary School coming next week!  This is great news after their flights were cancelled due to the global IT outage.  Thanks again to Mrs Shelley Lee and the team of staff who have worked so hard to make these visits such a success.  Thank you also to all of you wonderful families who have taken our Japanese guests into your homes and enjoyed a great experience.

Mental Health is such a consideration in the 21st Century as our world has changed so much over time.  It is great to have our Year 6 students being given the opportunity to engage with professionals in this area.  I am hoping many of our Year 6 Parents can get along to the Parent Information Session next Monday, 26 August, so that you can hear some information on supporting your child’s mental health.  Thank you to Mrs Katie Bailey and the Year 6 Team for organising this great opportunity.

Good luck to all of our children who are competing in the Regional Athletics Carnival that is coming up and thank you to our Mr Jeremie Clarke-Okah and the PE team for getting the children prepared to do their best.

Still on sport, I believe that the Junior Athletics Carnival will be held here at Ironside next week, as opposed to going offsite, that is exciting!!  I am keen to see how it all happens.

There are some other wonderful, extension opportunities in our school at the moment too - the Maths Olympiad, the Australian Maths Competition, the Brisbane Northern Chess Competition and let’s not forget Interschool Sport.  It is so great to see that Ironside State School offers so many opportunities to extend children in areas they excel in.  Thank you so much to the staff who organise all of these opportunities and work with the children to get them ready to participate, as well as attending them.

In getting everyone excited about Father’s Day, our very own Chappy Thu is hosting a Father’s Day Breakfast.  It sounds like it is going to be a truly wonderful morning for kids to connect with their Dads, make sure you come along to that.  See further in the newsletter for all of the details.  Have a great day on Father’s Day to our Dads and those who are father figures; you are so important in our loves and communities!

Make sure you have it in your diaries that Friday 30 August is a pupil-free day, there is no school that day.  Maybe you can make it a long Father’s Day Weekend?  :)

Recently it was Support Staff Week.  A primary school has many support staff; Business Managers, Office Staff, Technical Officers, Schools Officers and Speech Language Therapists.  We thank all of the people who make up this wonderful team at Ironside State School, we couldn’t do it without you.

Whilst on the topic of Support Staff, I recognise that sometimes the decisions I make as the principal of the school can cause people to feel upset.  When making decisions for a large school like Ironside, there are many people that are affected and understandably, not everyone can agree with all decisions made.  Last week, I was very distressed to hear about my front office staff being spoken to aggressively on the phone and also that disparaging remarks were being made on social media.  These are not positive ways to communicate.  My staff have the right to be safe in their workplace, just like everyone has in their own place of work and I would ask that you please communicate respectfully.  As principal, I am the responsible officer for the school.  Should you need to discuss a matter or process, please make an appointment to see me or email me on akell58@eq.edu.au.

I have some staff news to share.  Congratulations to Mrs Alice Cowan-Dillon, who has been appointed the acting Head of Curriculum at Craigslea State School for the remainder of this year.  Mrs Cowan-Dillon has been at Ironside State School for 15 years and has made so many contributions throughout that time.   We thank Mrs Cowan-Dillon for everything and wish her all the best for the remainder of 2024.  We are also farewelling one of our cleaners, Mr Tony Sellar.  Mr Sellar has been part of our cleaning team at Ironside State School for a very long time.  We thank Mr Sellar for all he has done and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.  Mr Michael Wray, our school’s officer is also on extended leave and we wish Mr Wray all the best during his time away.

I will finish on an update around our swimming pool.  Thank you to the P&C for funding the replacement of the heating pump, we are so very grateful.  Every effort is being made to have our pool up and running again by Monday the 26th August but we will send out communications if there are changes to that.  We cannot wait to see it operational again.

Have a wonderful fortnight everyone!

Yours in Education

Angie Kelly

PS I am so sorry about the miscommunication around wearing orange for No Bullying Day.  It was on our calendar all term but with the amount of organising for our wonderful Book Week, we just couldn’t fit it in, and I did not remember to remove it - my apologies!  Many children diligently read the newsletter calendar with their families and wore orange and that pop of orange around the place was great reminder about the message.  Bullying is when people repeatedly and intentionally use words or actions against someone or a group of people to cause distress and risk to their wellbeing.  Globally, we know that bullying is simply not ok, and it is most definitely not ok at Ironside State School.

Important Term 3 Dates

A message from Queensland Education

Every day Counts

Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on average, with higher student achievement. Additionally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience.

Further, research shows that poor school attendance is associated with:

  • lower academic achievement including literacy and numeracy
  • leaving school with fewer qualifications
  • reduced opportunities for students to learn and access educational resources, further limiting achievement
  • further absenteeism in higher year levels

If you're concerned about your child's attendance or absenteeism, please contact your school for further information. In the meantime, please see below for further information.

News from Mr Weston-Murdoch

Dear parents and caregivers,

Dear parents and caregivers,

School Values and Expectations:  Weeks 5 & 6

Our focus for this past fortnight has been:

Bridge Builders – Skill of the week

The skills we’ve been practising.

(Weeks 5 & 6): Calming down body and mind

Being able to calm down when we are upset or stressed is something all ages can be challenged by.

Our emotions are affected by our hormones. There are hormones released, such as cortisol and adrenalin, when our body perceives a threat. These hormones can create changes in our body often called a fight or flight response. Calming down helps reduce these stress hormones.

Learning to have flexible thinking and the ability to regulate emotional changes in our body are important life skills that children need to learn and see modelled.

Encourage persistence when your child is trying to calm down. Praise the effort not just the success. This then ensures the child has the space to make mistakes, it encourages them that as long as they keep trying they are being successful.

Teaching our children calming down skills is crucial to empower them for life!

“Empowered for Life”, Jocelyne Chirnside.

Around the classrooms - Prep

In Prep A for English, we have been writing retells of stories we have read. The books we have read are; Edward the Emu by Sheena Knowles, Clancy and Millie and the Very Fine House by Libby Gleeson and The Enormous Turnip retold by Katie Daynes. Prep A had the chance to hold and feel a turnip bought from the farmers market. The students used describing words in a whole class discussion when describing their thoughts around the peculiar vegetable.

Alongside drawing and writing retells of these stories, the students have also identified their own personal connects with these stories. Prep A has said they don’t think they would like turnip soup but do like pumpkin soup instead!

In Science, the students have been exploring materials and identifying their properties. We have done classroom searches of objects and identify why objects are made with a particular material over another.

Around the classrooms - Year 1

On Friday morning of week 5, the students of 1E were surprised with their classroom being closed for cleaning! The students enjoyed this provocation to help them wonder about how to care for environments, who should care for their environment and why it’s important.

The students had many wonderings…

  • Why is there a mess?
  • Why didn’t it get cleaned?
  • Who left the classroom like this?
  • Who is responsible for this?
  • How are we going to learn with this mess?

Around the classrooms - Year 2

In HASS this term, Grade 2s have been learning about the history of significant sites and events in Brisbane.

We visited Wolston Farmhouse, which is a historic landmark - the oldest surviving residential farmhouse in Brisbane. The children had loads of fun experiencing what life was like in the mid 1850’s. They even got to do washing by hand, which most agreed it was the most favourite activity!

Kind regards,

Scott Weston-Murdoch
Deputy Principal P-2
and the P-2 Team

News from Mr Corbett

Dear Families,

On Thursday 15th two Ironside Chess teams travelled up to St. Joseph’s College Nudgee to compete in the Term 3 Brisbane North inter-school chess tournament. We had a team entered in C-division and another team in A-division. Our A-division team of Jacob Lee, Jonny Chen, Yuval Koifman, and Caitlyn Davidson placed 2nd overall, receiving silver medals. Jacob Lee achieved a perfect 7/7 wins to finish first overall individually, receiving a gold medal. In C-division, Gita Nugroho received a merit ribbon for achieving 4.5/7 wins. Special mention also to Jonny Chen, who at only 9 years old won 4/7 games in A-division against students much older than himself. All our students played their best with great sportsmanship and gained valuable experience in learning from their wins and more importantly their losses.

Class 3B's Hands-On Learning Adventure

Class 3B have been exploring 3D shapes using hands-on resources. The students thoroughly enjoyed discovering the different properties of these shapes. Their enthusiasm continued during the time unit, where they created vibrant posters to showcase their understanding of key vocabulary. It was a fantastic journey of discovery and learning in 3B!

Shaping Up in 3A: Exploring the World of 3D!

In 3A, students have been immersed in the study of 3D shapes, gaining hands-on experience in understanding their properties. They have been working diligently to identify and describe the faces, edges, and corners of various shapes, making impressive progress in their geometric learning. The enthusiasm and engagement shown by the students are commendable, reflecting their growing curiosity and understanding of these important mathematical concepts.

3C’s Hands-On Adventure with 3D Shapes

Students in 3C have been learning about identifying and creating a variety of 3D shapes, transforming their understanding of geometry from flat surfaces to captivating, tangible objects. They eagerly engaged in hands-on activities, constructing shapes such as cubes, spheres, and pyramids. The class demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and creativity, crafting models and exploring the properties of these shapes.

Absorbent Adventures in 4A

Students in 4A have been exploring the properties of materials through hands-on Science experiments on absorbency. Students tested how different materials soaked up liquids, gaining valuable insights into their properties.

Mastering the Art of Persuasion: Year 4's Creative Ad Campaigns

4D have been exploring the exciting realm of persuasive advertising during our English lessons. They investigated various techniques used in print ads, such as emotive language, eye-catching visuals, and memorable slogans. After gaining insights, the students put their knowledge into practice by creating their own persuasive print advertisements. The creativity and thoughtfulness displayed in their designs were remarkable, reflecting their deep understanding of how to craft a message that resonates with an audience. This activity not only sharpened their persuasive skills but also encouraged them to think critically and innovatively.

Year 4 Excursion to the Towards Zero Waste Centre

Year 4 students had to opportunity to visit the Towards Zero Waste Centre at the Brisbane Landfill in Rochedale. During their trip, they learned about how waste is categorised into organic waste, recyclable materials and general waste for landfill. The students explored the processes involved in waste management and discovered practical ways to manage waste at home. By focusing on the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling, they gained valuable insights into environmental responsibility and how their everyday actions can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Warm regards,

Thomas Corbett
Deputy Principal Y3-4
and the Y3-4 Team

Thank you to all the parents who are joining us on Tuesday afternoons to discuss all the wonderful things about school, parenting & life. It is an absolute pleasure spending time with you all.

Over the last two weeks, we’ve had the wonderful Rosa talking to us about Self Care & the Triple P Positive Parenting Program. Rosa has such an endearing way of presenting importing topics that is informative, thoughtful & engaging – Thank you Rosa!

If you are interested in getting a copy of any of the presentations given at the Parent Group, please email me at tklet0@eq.edu.au.

Chappy Squad

Unfortunately, we’ve had a few interruptions when it came to activities this fortnight with me being sick for most of Week 5 & the EKKA Holiday in Week 6. Despite the interruptions, the Squad remained in good spirits & bursting in enthusiasm! It is a real privilege to spend time with these wonderful students!

Special thanks to the following members for their outstanding contribution to the activities & school over the past two week:

  • Kelly, Arnika, Lavit, Tanmeh, Isabella, Ella, Saksham, Fred, Sam, Ben Olivia, Victoria & Mabel for volunteering to be our Pack Up crew over the past fortnight. Your willingness to pack up, vacuum, wipe tables & put away badges really makes such a difference to Chappy Central – Thank you so much!

  • Arnika, Mabel & Sam for always volunteering to take on extra jobs every week. I am blown away by your continued commitment!
  • Ilai, Saksham, Ella, Eva & Mabel for your showing such resilience & persistence with making hearts. It’s not always easy trying to keep thread untangle or embellishments from falling off or knowing from which direction to sew from to keep the hearts neat…but despite the frustrations, I am proud of you all for not giving up.
  • Grace, April, Liya, Tahlia & Livia for always being so kind & thoughtful in the way you interact with each other as well as other students.

Here are the top members & teams as of Week 5:

Chappy Activities

Chappy Activities were a bit fractured this fortnight, but lots of fun was still had at the 1,000 Hearts Club, where we added another 18 hearts to our collection; the Scavenger Hunt, where we learnt about all our upcoming events such as Book Week & Father’s Day Breakfast (Congratulations to Fred & Sam for leading the wining team!), Origami Club, where we made Panda Faces with Ann & of course Bubble Friday, filled with glorious bubbles from the Oasis to the Prep Area 😊

September Holidays

Believe it or not, the September Holidays are just around the corner & these holidays I will be working at Camp Imagine at the St Lucia Uniting Church. This year, we will have two full days (9am to 3pm) filled with a whole new selection of fun crafts & games. The camp costs $45 for both days & even includes lunch for all the students. As full disclosure, this camp is run by a church so there will be mention of God at some point in the day. Spaces are limited so don’t forget to book! I look forward to seeing you there 😊

Payment due dates

As we start to approach the end of the school term, we'd like to remind you about the importance of making timely payments for excursions, incursions or other school event.

Many of the events we organise throughout the year involve a great deal of planning and organisation. Transport and entrance costs need to be paid in advance, and in many instances, numbers need to be finalised with third parties before the actual event day.

We'd hate for your child(ren) to miss out on these fantastic learning opportunities and for this reason, we kindly ask you to make a note of payment due dates for any upcoming event.

If making a payment via BPoint, please allow at least 48 hours for the payment to appear on your account.

Thank you for your co-operation and support.

QKR!

Payments for excursions, incursions, camps and music events can now be paid for via the QKr! app. If you don't already have the app, please download it from your app store.

https://apps.apple.com/au/app/qkr/id589799471

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mastercard.labs.qkr&hl

QParents

In our continuous efforts to enhance communication and streamline administrative processes, we will be transitioning to QParents for the following areas: reporting of school absences, invoice & payments, consent for activities, and accessing school reports.

QParents will eventually become the main hub for all these tasks.

In order make this transition a success it’s important for all parents to be registered and have access to QParents.

Here’s what you’ll be able to do with QParents once registered:

  • View and download report cards online as soon as they are published
  • Provide us with a reason for unexplained student absences, anytime and anywhere
  • Notify the school of a future student absence at any time
  • Pay your invoices. No cash or waiting at reception required, simply log in and pay online at any time
  • Forget having to fill out and deliver a paper form for consent. Instead, provide consent for excursions and events using the QParents app.

The registration process is straightforward but it’s simpler if you use a home computer or laptop rather than your mobile phone*.

* After registering you can download the QParents app to log in and use on your mobile phone.

Please see below on how to register.

Please note, you will be asked to provide your child’s EQI number. You should be able to find this on a recent invoice. If you still cannot find this, please email enrolments@ironsidess.eq.edu.au and request it.

STEPS TO REGISTER

  1. Locate your invite code (check your email. If you don't have this, please email the above)
  2. Click the following link: https://qparents.qld.edu.au/#/registration/account-owner/invitation/
  3. Follow instruction to get your ID verified.
  4. Once verified you will have full access to QParents. Now you can download the app for your phone.

Please note, for the majority of parents, you will be able to get your documents verified online. If, however, you do not have the 100 points needed to register, you will need to come to the school to present your documents.

Invoices

BPoint is the preferred payment method for Department of Education, due to the efficiencies that automated receipting brings to schools. BPoint is an online payment system which provides schools with a secure and efficient method of collecting payments for parents/customers. BPoint allows a parent to pay their child's invoices directly from home and receive the receipt immediately.

Click directly onto the link on your invoice (example one) at the bottom left-hand corner of your invoice.  By clicking on the link on your invoice it will automatically fill in your CRN (Customer Reference Number) and invoice number.  All you need to do is fill in the amount you want to pay.  You cannot pay multiple invoices on the one link.

If you want to pay all your invoices online, you can do this by clicking the link in the box and entering the exact six-digit invoice number from your statement (example two).

Example one

Example two

If you prefer, click the link below and follow the steps to make a payment.

  1. Log on to: www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete External link
  2. Enter your Customer Reference Number (CRN). It is always the same for your child. It can be found on the bottom left hand corner of your invoice.
  3. Enter invoice number
  4. Enter student name
  5. Enter amount $
