Acknowledgement of Country

Ironside State School acknowledges the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects to the Elders past, present, and emerging for they hold the traditions, culture, memories and hopes of Indigenous Australia.  The Turrbal Aboriginal Nation, who spoke the Jagera Language, roamed these lands.

Principal's Message Term 4, Week 8

Hi Everyone,

As you are reading this, I am on the Year 4 Camp at the Sunshine Coast -  yeehah!!  I am looking forward to the next few days with these great kids and staff.

I saw so many excited children with their Book Fair purchases last week and thankfully, many of them actually bought books, not just putty to play with.  (Crazes!  Where do they come from?  At the moment it is putty!) Thank you to Mrs Annika Sauvage and Mrs Cath Roche, our librarians, who have organised it all.  Thank you too, to all of our incredible helpers in the Library Monitor’s program.

Congratulations to all of our Prep to Year 2 Merit Certificate winners last week, very well done!

It was a special treat to have the Intermediate Strings and Year 2 Choir teaming up to produce some simply astonishingly beautiful music!  I was moved to tears.  Congratulations to Mrs Trudy Weekes and Mrs Marianne Huxley and of course the children - just outstanding!  Please see the video I made of it, but it won’t do the real performance justice.  Coming up this Friday we have the Year 3-6 STAR Assembly, and our fabulous Senior Strings will be keeping us entertained.

This week we have our Year 5 & 6s getting to participate in STEM activities.  Thank you for organising this Mrs Bailey and thank you to the visiting STEM Team.

And finally, a special congratulations to two Year 3 Ironside Stars, Alex and Ben, who participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC).

Well done Alex and Ben for all the hard work you put in, keep going!

Have a wonderful week!

 Yours in Education

Angie Kelly

PS Can we make pick up time at the end of the school day safer?  We sure can.  Please, please, please - do not park on the yellow lines.  Those yellow lines indicate that you are not to stop because it is dangerous to do so.  Let’s not stop on yellow lines and keep ourselves and our kids safe.

News from Mr Weston-Murdoch

Dear parents and caregivers,

School Values and Expectations:  Weeks 7 & 8

Our focus for this fortnight is:  Respectful

Around the classrooms - Prep

In the Prep English Unit this term, we have been making and explaining predictions about a variety of books including ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ and ‘Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam’.

‘Cats and Robbers’ by Russell Ayto, is a very entertaining and exciting book about three pesky robbers! The children predicted what would happen in the story and discussed it with their friends. They drew their ideas before writing their predictions. Then they wrote what they thought would happen first, then / next and finally. Here are some of the predictions: -

Here are the children’s guided drawings of the clever cats from Cats and Robbers!

Around the classrooms - Year 1

In Science we have been learning about habitats and how animals have different needs. We utilised water colour paints to create amazing artworks. Check out our peaceful pond, dry desert and rainbow rainforest!

Around the classrooms – Year 2

Last week, the year 2 children attended the ‘Step into History’ incursion as part of the unit ‘Technology Past and Present,’ where they had the opportunity to experience different aspects of life in the past. The students used a typewriter, wrote on slates, nib pens and ink, washed with washboards, played with old toys, learned old games and even learned the art of shaving. It was a hands-on and extremely fun way to learn, and we were grateful being able to see and handle so many objects which once belonged in the past.

Kind regards,

Scott Weston-Murdoch
Deputy Principal P-2
and the P-2 Team

News from Mr Corbett

Dear Parents,

Whilst I'm away on the Year 4 camp, here's a small update from some of our year 3 students.

Hope you have a great rest of the week!

Kind regards,
Thomas Corbett
Deputy Principal (Years 3 & 4)

Year 3D’s “Teach and Share” Highlights!

This term, 3D students have been taking centre stage during our Friday “Teach and Share” sessions. Each week, students step into the spotlight as experts on topics they are passionate about, sharing their knowledge and creativity with their teacher and classmates.

So far, we’ve uncovered fascinating insights into Pomeranians, Poodles, and Pokémon! Our adventurous taste buds have taken us on a global journey, trying foods from Mexico, Japan, and Chile. The class even had a chance to learn about the art of fencing, complete with impressive poses and footwork demonstrations.

Summer reading Challenge

The Ironside Library might be closed for the summer break soon, but never fear the Summer Reading Challenge is here. By encouraging students to keep reading over the holiday break, it can help maintain literacy levels while promoting a love of reading. We challenge our students to explore new books, engage with different genres, develop their independence as readers and have a GREAT time doing it!

We will then arrange for Accounts send you an invoice for the replacement cost of the book. If you believe a book has been returned, please double check it is not in your student's classroom, then contact the library.

Thank you for your support in helping to find and return our wonderful Ironside resources ready for an exciting 2025.

Library Monitors

Our Library Monitors are experts in so many areas of our Library. We've recently spotted some Year 6 leaders are working as a team to help shelve our non-fiction resources. One of our Year 5 students helped us create a modelled example and support younger students for our Friday activity. Thanks, Library team!
