Acknowledgement of Country

Ironside State School acknowledges the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects to the Elders past, present, and emerging for they hold the traditions, culture, memories and hopes of Indigenous Australia.  The Turrbal Aboriginal Nation, who spoke the Jagera Language, roamed these lands.

Welcome to Term 1, Week 2 2025

Hi Everyone,

We had such a wonderful week last week and that is because of our beautiful children and committed staff. Thank you so much to each and every one of them. Thank you also to all of our wonderful parent community who constantly support us. This scene has been set for a really great year!

Thank you to everyone who managed to make our assembly on Friday. I was able to do a lot of welcoming of new staff, new families, and of course our Preps!  I delivered a few messages around walking on concrete to keep us safe, putting rubbish in the bin, or picking it up if we see it to keep our environment beautiful and our animals safe, and I talked about wearing our correct school uniform with pride, which I also mentioned in last week's newsletter. I took the photo down below on the first day of school of three of our wonderful students wearing the uniform with pride. It is important to keep our hair tied back neatly, as this keeps us cool, doesn’t hang in our face when trying to concentrate and helps to prevent the spread of head lice. If children do put a ribbon in their hair, blue is the colour of our uniform and ribbons that match that would be great. I also mentioned the basic jewellery standard, of the watch and small earrings; again, this is around safety. With over 900 people moving around a pretty small site, we try to minimise wearing anything that can be torn out and cause injury. There is no issue with children wearing clear nail polish. The correct Ironside State School shirt and sport shirt goes without saying, as does the Ironside State School dress. Shorts and skorts can be blue or grey and on our feet, plain white socks and black shoes. Thanks so much to our children for wearing the uniform with pride.  This Friday at 9:15am, is our Year 4 to 6 Merit assembly, we hope to see there.

Coming up this week:

  • Day 8, Thursday 6 February.
  • Year 4-6 Merit Assembly, Friday 7 February, 9:15am in the hall.

Last week I mentioned that we have some changes this year because we have 2 multi-age classes but we also have another exciting change too!  Our Ironside children are being taught a second language from Prep onwards.  So, Prep, Year 2, Year 4 and Year 6 are learning Japanese and Year 1, Year 3 and Year 5 are learning Spanish.  I understand that parents and children wish they could choose the language they learn, I would want that too but logistically it is impossible.  This is the first school I have been at that teaches more than one language.  I look forward to hearing about all of the fun things children are doing right across our school in their Japanese and Spanish lessons.

Year 1, 2 and 3 are all swimming this term, starting this week. Please ensure you know what day your child is swimming and send them with what they need for these lessons. Speaking of swimming, our Swim Club kicked off on Friday night and it was a roaring success. Thank you so much to all of the wonderful volunteers at Swim Club that make this happen. Would you consider getting your children into Swim Club? It is a great way to meet people and helps kids to be healthy and active, as well as cool.

I will finish by reminding everyone about what I said last week; all of our funding is tied into the Day 8 Enrolment Return.  If you have friends who you know are intending to enrol their children, get them to contact us immediately please!  Ironside is not like other schools; we have so many students come and go all the time, so our funding is even more crucial - please, please, please spread the word!!  If children are enrolled after Thursday the 6th  February, we do not receive funding for them for 2025.

Have a truly fabulous week!

Yours in Education

Angie Kelly

PS Everyone needs to use the lights to cross the road or pedestrian crossings. If you don't do this, you are endangering the lives of yourselves and others. Please help to keep yourself and others safe by crossing at the lights or using pedestrian crossings.  A lot of our families come from other countries and may not realise this. If you see people not using the lights or pedestrian crossing, can you please gently explain

This Week Around Ironside!

Prep A

It has been a super start for our new Ironside Preps so far! The Preps have celebrated their first day of school by making some new friends and learning new faces. On the first day, they also enjoyed some sweet treats and made their first day crowns. In Prep, we have been exploring a range of picture books about starting school. We have also read the book ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’ by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek. This led the Preps to learning where important places are within the school and going on a class hunt looking for the sneaky green sheep. They then coloured in their own special sheep. We are excited to watch the Preps grow and learn this year!
