Welcome to Term 2, Week 1 2025
From the Principal
Hi Everyone,
Welcome back! We are ready and we are looking forward to a wonderful term. I hope your holidays were just magic.
Before we get into discussing this week, let’s look back at the final week of school, it was busy and wonderful!!
Our Prep to Year 2 Easter Bonnet parade really was a hopping good time and we thank our wonderful Deputy Principal Mrs Tara Griffin for bringing it back to Ironside State School. Thank you to all of you who managed to make it in to enjoy it or helped your little ones fashion a bonnet. Thank you Mrs Griffin and all of the Prep to Year 2 teachers.

The Junior Swimming Carnival was a lot of fun and it was wonderful seeing the children getting to participate in the pool. Again, it was great that families were able to pop in and join in the carnival but if you couldn’t make it, please do not worry, your little ones had plenty of support. A HUGE thank you to our Sport’s Captains who did a wonderful job in the pool helping any child that needed it. Thank you to Mr Jorma Bushnell who organised and ran the whole carnival, as well as our Year 1 and 2 staff - what a great day it was!

Harmony Day was very special. It was standing room only at our Harmony Day assembly and for good reason. The Year 1 and 2 choir singing ‘Everyone Belongs’ was just amazing - congratulations to them and Mrs Marianne Huxley. The whole school singing ‘I am Australian’ was so moving and the Harmony Day awards were inspirational - congratulations to all of those children who received one (though I know teachers struggled to finalise their decision, there were so many worthy candidates). The shared lunch was just wonderful - thank you to everyone who contributed, we are so grateful and again, it was touching to have so many parents with us and thank you also must go to the teachers who helped share it all out. The Harmony Day Talent Show was bursting with a variety of talent and we loved it - congratulations to all of the performers and thank you to all of the people who supported them to get onto the stage. The Harmony Day disco was a riot and we have to thank DJ Corbett (Deputy Principal Mr Thomas Corbett) for spinning the tunes, it was a lot of fun! Overall, it was a really great day and thanks must go to our Harmony Day Committee, a group of students who suggested everything that happened that day, we love when children get to drive events. One more thing, the P&C announced that day that they are going to be having new positions, Cultural Representatives - watch this space!

You can see a selection of the photos I took down below in the photo gallery.
Coming up:
- Rugby Union trials, 11-12 year old boys and girls - Wednesday 23rd April.
- Ironside State School ANZAC Day service - 2pm Thursday 24th April.
We have some new staff starting with us this term. Welcome to Ms Lea Benjamin who will be commencing as the Prep A teacher for the remainder of the year. Ms Benjamin is replacing Ms Sheree Hoac, who has taken an opportunity to move into being both a Health teacher in our school, as well as a Support Teacher. Ms Hoac is replacing Ms Deb Warren who has gone on a year’s leave. We are also welcoming Ms Georgia Perkins to Ironside State School. Ms Perkins will teach 5C for the remainder of the year, replacing Ms Lanie Heron who has taken up a teaching position in the country. We have a also have a new teacher Mr Bruce Vayo who will be supporting student in our Year 3 to 6 area of the school, welcome Mr Vayo. We are also welcoming a new chaplain, Mrs Roslyn Tayler! Mrs Tayler will be at our school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and we are very grateful.
This week coming is a short week because of the ANZAC Day public holiday on Friday (NO SCHOOL) and yesterday’s Easter Monday public holiday.
Good luck to all children participating in the Rugby Union trials tomorrow, noting it is for boys and girls
Our ANZAC Commemorative Service on Thursday will be special, no doubt, please feel free to join us at 2pm for that in our hall. Mr Corbett and I will be attending the Dawn Service at the Toowong Cenotaph with our School Captains on ANZAC Day but feel free to join us, the details are in the flyer below. The marking of ANZAC Day continues to grow in popularity and my belief is that it is because we have a growing consciousness to insist on peace in our world. The marking of this day honours the fallen but also reminds us that wars have long lasting devastating effects. Lest We Forget.
Have a truly fabulous week!
Yours in Education
Angie Kelly

UQ Book Fair 2025

Dear Ironside Parents/Caregivers,
The University of Queensland (UQ) is excited to announce the return of our UQ Book Fair for 2025 from 2 - 5 May and after some outstanding entries into our bookmark competition last year, we warmly invite our local primary schools to get involved again.
The UQ Book Fair is an annual fundraiser organised by volunteers, with all proceeds contributing to UQ student scholarships and important research.
This year, for the first time, we're expanding our usual Saturday activities into a bumper day out with dozens of free talks, tours and kid-friendly pop-ups - families in our local community won't want to miss it!
We appreciate your support in encouraging your students to participate.
Regards,
The University of Queensland

School Zone Safety
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
School zone signs are displayed as you approach the school and shows both the speed limit and the times you need to reduce your speed around the school. Children's crossing are identified by children crossing flags, which are displayed near crossings before and after school hours.
When the crossing is supervised, you as a motorist must:
- wait until all pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders have crossed the road and the crossing supervisor has returned to the footpath
- abide by the direction given by the School Crossing Supervisor.
If the crossing is unsupervised, you as a motorist must:
- give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on or entering a children’s, pedestrian or marked foot crossings
- give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on or entering a road you’re turning into
- give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on a slip lane
- give way to pedestrians in a share zone
- travel at a speed allowing you to stop safely at a crossing if needed
As a driver, it's important to make sure you give way to all pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders such as skateboards, e-scooters. You must also give way to pedestrians using a motorised mobility device such as a motorised wheelchair or a mobility scooter.
Some of our most vulnerable road users are children getting to and from school, so it’s important to slow down and abide by the crossing rules, as it won’t make much difference to the trip time, but it could very well save lives.
Visit the Street Smarts website to find more information about what to do at pedestrian and children crossings.
