Bridgebuilders

News from Mr Murdoch

Dear parents and caregivers,

Bridge Builders - Skill of the week: Ignore and Don’t React
Ignoring or not reacting to conflict is much easier said than done.  Without clear guidance about how to do this, and when to do it, many children will quickly say, “That doesn’t work.”  This means that they lose a powerful tool that does have its place in dealing with difficult behaviour.

Ignore and Don’t React should be used either when the child doesn’t know the other person and there is no need to resolve, or when the other person is trying to get a rise or reaction out of them.

Some tips for effectively ignoring and not reacting are:

  • Take a deep breath and relax your body
  • Don’t look at the person
  • Think of something else
  • Move to a safe place

When children choose not to react they are showing they have the power to stay emotionally calm.

*REMINDER - Prep Arrivals and Departures:  Term 2
Prep students are becoming more confident with school routines and expectations and as a school we would like to continue building upon their ever-increasing independence and sense of responsibility.

Arrivals:
This process remains the same.

  • Parents wishing to wait with their children before school commences, must do so in the appropriate Green Zone (Grassy Patch). This remains the most appropriate space in the school for adults to practice social distancing.
  • Alternatively, Prep students can make their way to the Prep Precinct on their own or escorted by an older sibling where they will be supervised by school staff.

In both of these scenarios, we ask that parents observe the “Hug and Go” signs and that Prep children are provided the time to organise their belongings for themselves. Remember the supervising adults are there to support.

We actively encourage families to have conversations that support our Preppies to take ownership in this space.  These small routines create an opportunity for students to build independence and resilience.

Departures:
Neighbouring classes will be working together to make their way to the Grassy Patch at 3:00pm.  Prep students will be supervised by myself and another member of staff.

  • Children are to wait until their known adult or sibling arrives to collect.
  • Once collected, students are to wait beside the responsible person. This is not a playtime.

As a matter of safety and a sign of respect to the rest of the Ironside community using this space, we would appreciate your support in reminding our Preppies of the “Right place, right time, right way”.

Parents wishing to use Ironside Street as their preferred departure zone may do so by contacting their classroom teacher to advise of this preference.

If this is your preferred departure zone, please be aware of the following:

  • Students will independently make their way to Ironside Street from their Prep classroom.
  • Students are to wait behind the fence and sit on the bench seating under the direction of the supervising adult on duty. *This adult will be wearing a high-vis vest
  • Parents are to wait on the footpath to collect Prep students.
  • Parents to advise supervising adult before collecting and departing.

Should you have any questions regarding these processes, please speak with your classroom teacher.

On behalf of the Prep – Year 2 team, we wish you a safe and happy holiday.  We look forward to seeing you all again in Term 2.

MOVED IN!
We are very excited that the ‘A Block’ renovations have been completed, which means that 3B, 3C and 3D classes can move into their beautifully new and airy learning spaces for the start of Term 2.

What a wonderful way to start a new term!

SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES
All being well, our first assembly is planned for Friday 23 April – this is being planned as a whole school assembly to commemorate ANZAC Day.  In order to safely accommodate all Prep – 6 classes and their teachers, while maintaining social distancing requirements, audience seating will be set up in the J Block under-croft, facing into the Hall.

Assemblies are held on Friday mornings 9:15 – 9:45am, with the Term 2 schedule as follows:

School Photos
Envelopes for school photos were sent home with students on Monday.  If your child did not attend school on Monday or left early they will receive their envelope when school resumes for Term 2.

Debtor Statements
Debtor statements will be sent out today for any students with outstanding invoices.  If your statement contains a negative amount this means you have a credit  for that amount.    If, however, you have paid individual invoices by BPOINT in the last couple of days it can take up to two days to be reflected on your account.

If you have any questions regarding the debtor statement please contact admin@ironsidess.eq.edu.au

News from Art

In term two the year 3 students will be designing and constructing a dragon mask during their art lessons. If anyone in the community owns actual ceremonial or performance ASIAN style masks, could I please borrow them for their initial lessons to help establish greater depth and meaning to their curriculum. I promise to take excellent care of them. Drop in to the art studio to see me or email tlwig0@eq.edu.au.  Thanks again.

News from Ironside P&C

Annual P&C Contribution Program - UPDATED
Dear Ironside Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to another year of rewarding school community activities. A very warm welcome to families that are new to the Ironside community.

Every year the P&C raises funds for the benefit of all students through a P&C Contribution Program to support the school. Past efforts include the tuckshop renovation, playground refurbishment, music instrument upgrade and uniform shop fit out.

Recognising the last 12 months has been financially difficult for some and considering the P&C has a healthy bank balance, due in part to cancelling the major capital project of air-conditioning the hall due to cost blowouts and no longer being a value for money proposition, we have decided for this year not to proactively ask for monetary contributions to the P&C Contribution Program.

Instead, we are asking for a donation of something just as important: your time. Robust community participation is the hallmark of an effective and vibrant P&C. Participating in the P&C is one of the best ways to show your children how much you value their education and how interested you are in what they do. Volunteering in P&C shops and at events can help you to form friendships with other parents and carers and feel a part of your school community. Ways to get involved including the following.

Volunteer to work with…

  • Tuckshop – assemble food orders, serve your children at second break (from week 6)
  • Sausage Sizzle @ Tuckshop – typically on the last week of each term (COVID restrictions, notwithstanding)
  • Uniform Shop – assemble/deliver to classes online uniform orders, cashier when shop open to public
  • Swim Club (Friday evenings, Terms 1 & 4) – timekeeping for races, run the BBQ, serve at food stall

Help with Planning Events

  • Spring Fair 2021 (occurs in September every other year)
  • Mother’s Day Stall (May) – assembling/selling Mum gifts to students
  • Galas (occur in October every other year; next one 2022)
  • Friends of the Arts – lend support by attending musical evening events (TBA throughout the year)
  • Entertainment Fundraiser – periodically monitor sales through website; email parents reminders to join

Attend Monthly P&C Meetings

  • Bring your thoughts, fundraising ideas and concerns to be heard and hear from Ironside’s executive team

If interested, please complete the Volunteer Expression of Interest Form (see link below) and return to the school office to be placed in the P&C Collection box or email same data to lroy9@eq.edu.au, Lynn Roy, Business Manager.

Parent involvement is essential for Ironside to continue to deliver a first-class education. Every minute of your time counts!!

Thank you for your support – on behalf of all Ironside students!

Sincerely,
Dr Tuan Ha
