News from Mr Johnson

Dear Parents,
Congratulations Charlie Mc (6A)
Since our last newsletter Charlie has participated in the 10-12 (Boys) Cricket State Carnival held in Bundaberg. Charlie opened the batting for Met West and had a very successful carnival. Two highlights of note are Charlie’s 83 on day one against Northern and being a part of the State Champion team for 2021.
Metropolitan West and Sunshine Coast were determined equal winners of the state championship as the carnivals fifth and final day was abandoned due to overnight rain.
Final P&C Meeting - 2021
Next Tuesday is the final P&C meeting for 2021. 6:30pm in the staff room. All welcome.
Business Manager – 2022
Mr Paul Logan is the successful applicant for the Acting Business Manager position behind Ms Christine Delaney. This arrangement is for term one with the likelihood of extension.
Be kind online – Supporting cybersafety in Queensland state schools
The department has launched animations to encourage students to block content, report it, and support each other if they see or experience bullying online.
The animations show common scenarios that occur, and remind students to Be kind online. Primary students can find out how bullying in gaming and sharing mean content can impact others and what actions they can take. Secondary students can explore the impact of sharing intimate photos and negative anonymous accounts.
It is important students know they are not alone and there are ways to prevent cyberbullying. Share the videos with your children and start the conversation today.
All the best for the final fortnight ahead. Keep safe and well.

News from Mr Murdoch
Dear parents and caregivers,
REVISION: Bridge Builders - Skill of the week: Be Kind
Teaching children to be kind to someone who they have been in conflict with seems like an oxymoron. Often, a child’s natural instinct when they have been hurt is to hurt back.
Kindness in conflict is unexpected and it can be the opposite to what someone expects. This can mean that they struggle to continue to be mean. Learning to be kind when we are hurt starts with how we think about the other person. It can require empathy and encourages children to be brave enough to be the hero in a problem.
Acts of kindness release hormones that make us feel calmer, healthier and happier. They can also be contagious.

Prep 2021 - Meet Your Teacher
Parents, please note that we will be conducting our ‘Meet Your Teacher’ event on Monday 6 December.
As the name suggests, this is an opportunity for our future Preppies and parents to meet their classroom teacher, classmates and see the classroom. It is also a great way for families to connect before the new school year begins.
I will make contact in Week 9 and provide Prep parents with more details closer to the date.
Around the School
Prep & Year 1:
On Thursday, Prep and Year 1 students participated in an end of year sports celebration. We all had the opportunity to engage in a range of activities such as obstacle course, scooter boards, running races, water play and more! It was lovely morning and a fantastic way to celebrate a fantastic year of PE in Prep and Year 1.
Year 2 get to celebrate on Friday!
Thank you to Mrs English for organising the best sports celebration!

The lost property shelves are located on the verandah leading to J Block (Year 4 classrooms, overlooking the oval). The easiest access is to go to the rear door of the hall (upper floor entrance), and veer to the right on to the veranda. There are signs in the area to direct you to the area.

Christmas Tree Project
Ms Wightwick and I are so excited to announce that our Christmas trees are finally on display at Toowong Village on Level 1 outside the Toowong Library! We would like to thank everyone who helped us on our community project. Our theme this year was Summer Wonderland and we wanted to show the ways we celebrate Christmas in Australia. Across 5 weeks, over 250 students from all the year levels from Prep to Year 6 came to contribute by painting, drawing, gluing, singing and of course, making origami! We believe our trees represent not only a Summer Wonderland, but how diverse and inclusive our school is. Every age, every level of ability and every talent is featured to show that every person is valued for who they are and what they have to offer.
Special thanks to Miss Keomahavong (Music Teacher) and her beautiful Voci Musicali Choir for Ironside’s rendition of the song Summer Wonderland (which can be heard through scanning our QR code on the trees) as well as Mr Nic Jones and Ms Leesa Behrens (IT team) for creating our QR Code and doing all the complex tech things needed to make it work. Thanks also to Mrs Mallika Mazumder for her tremendous help preparing the materials each week, thanks to the teachers who supported the project and encouraged their students to participate and last but not least, thanks to each student for giving up their first break to be part of the adventure!
We would love for you to see the trees for yourself and to vote for us! All you have to do is scan the QR code at the entry of the display (Level 1, outside Toowong Village) and select your favourite from the 13 trees shown. Remember, this QR code is at the entry of the display. The QR code directly on our trees will link you to our song, not to vote. Voting closes on Thursday 9 December 2021, 10am.
Thank you for your support!
Ms Wightwick and Chappy Thu
