News from Mr Johnson

Dear Parents,

SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY – 2020
On Tuesday this week I sent out a link to the abridged 2020 School Opinion Survey. Due to the impact of COVID-19 the Department of Education has organised for a shorter more concise pulse survey to be completed. Please see the information and link below for your access to the Parent Survey for this year.

Parents and caregivers are invited to participate in this year’s School Opinion Survey and have a say about schooling during the COVID-19 lockdown.  You are also given the opportunity to provide feedback about our school more generally.

Participation in the survey is anonymous and you are encouraged to take this opportunity to have your say.  The survey form has been designed so that it can easily be completed on a computer or smartphone. The online survey will be available until Friday, 17 July 2020, and should take less than five minutes to complete.

To access the survey, please click on the link below or copy and paste it into your web browser:

Parent survey – https://survey.qed.qld.gov.au/form/Parents-HaveYourSay

Please contact the school if you have any questions about the survey.

TERM THREE ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE INFORMATION
When school commences for the Term 3 we are relaxing our arrival and departure procedures in relation to zones/areas. From next term we are asking:

  • Parents to use the school entry and exit point that is most convenient to their route to school.
  • Prep students and older siblings to be collected promptly at 3:00pm
  • Year 1-6 students to be collected from 3:10pm.
  • If using a vehicle – HAVE A WINDOW SIGN for the staff member at the pick-up zone to assist the movement of children to vehicles
  • Parents using a vehicle to drop off or collect children – STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE.

Our arrival and departure zones are:

  • Hawken Drive (Front entry)
  • Swann Road (Near the bus stop)
  • Ironside Street
  • Central Avenue

Parents please ensure your child knows which one of these four zones is their collection point.

I appreciate our community’s tolerance around the time we have taken from the school day in establishing our current staggered departure routines. I am delighted to partner these new Term 3 routines, with a return to a full learning day for all students.

Ironside staff will continue to be at these arrival and departure points for the start of next term, ensuring your children enter and exit the school positively and safely.

UNIFORM EXPECTATIONS
As we enter the cool winter months, it’s timely to remind our families of the expectations around our uniform. If a school jacket or jumper is not possible (and this should be in the rarest of cases) then the required colour of jackets and jumpers is navy blue.

Along with adhering to our school dress code, remember to CLEARLY NAME AND LABEL your child’s uniform pieces.

This is the time of year when we start to see a constant and steady increase in lost property. Should uniforms items be handed in, we want to return them to their rightful owners as quickly as possible.

This is a terrific couple of weeks leading into the holiday break to be both clear on, and prepared to meet the uniform expectations for our second semester.

All the best for the week ahead. Nine down – One to go!

CONGRATULATIONS!
Felix B in Year 5 won U10 Age Champion at Toowong Little Athletics and the award of "Outstanding Achievement" for the club for the second year running.

Well done Felix!

*The Pocket - Early Education and Care*

Hi Ironside State School families!

Are you looking for a fabulous childcare centre?

The Pocket Early Education and Care, St Lucia’s newest child care centre is opening in early July.

Just a three minute drive from Ironside, our purpose-built centre offers a fun and supportive learning environment for your child, with state of the art facilities, engaged staff, nutritious meals prepared daily and our very own FUNdamentals program.

As an early learning centre, we at The Pocket believe that each child is unique. Because of this we cater to your child’s individual needs and developmental pathways, through our ‘learning by playing’ philosophy. This allows your child to better understand the world in which they live, through our planned early education programs which engages their capacity to participate, communicate, investigate, create, and reflect.

To support your child’s growing body as they develop and learn, we provide fresh, homestyle meals prepared on site, each day, by our Chef, Eliza. We also provide clear and regular communication daily about your child’s progress, routine and activities using Storypark.

Our degree qualified Early Childhood Teachers in our Kindergarten programme, ensures your child receives the best start to life before starting Prep. Our Centre Manager, Shandelle Banditt, and our friendly staff are committed to providing your child with incredible learning experiences in a safe and supportive environment that will foster a lifetime of benefits.

Educating and caring for your child 5 days per week, 52 weeks per year, 6.30am-6.30pm to support you and your family.

To join our Pocket community, call Elise, our Enrolments Manager, on 3568 5800 or 0476 997 332 or email enrolments@thepocketchildcare.com.au to discuss your children’s requirements.

AROUND THE SCHOOL

Prep:
Prep E student, Ann Olivia took some time earlier this term to write to the Prime Minister to wish him a happy birthday.

Here is Ann with her letter of reply from Mr Scott Morrison.

In Prep C, students have been discussing their ‘likes’ and ‘dislikes’ about fairy tales to practise their writing.  Thanks to Chester, Ali, Rigsel and Sue for their work.

Year 1: In 1E, students have been studying poetry and learning to write adaptations based on the author’s style.  Here are some adaptations of ‘Five Little Fish’.  Thank you to Moon, Lillian, Ashton, Aaliyah for their work.  A special thanks to all the 1E students who shared their writing with me this week.  Keep up the fantastic work!

Year 2:  In 2D, students have been making MAB monsters to practice their understanding of place value.  Hanif and Winnie, your monsters are fantastic!

In Art, students have been creating city scapes with a focus on perspective and 3D shapes.  Thank you Simon and Ella for sharing your creativity with us.

News from Mrs Vecchio

YEAR 3 NEWS FROM AROUND THE CLASSROOMS
Year 3 students are engaging in lots of “hands on” learning experiences to develop their understanding of measurement, with a focus on volume and capacity. Learning by doing, collaborating with peers and applying new knowledge to solve problems leads to “mastery learning”.

Year 3s are also focusing on “Cyber Safety” as part of their HPE studies – important and timely learning being shared as visual and oral presentations.

Each week, Year 3-4 Head of Curriculum, Mr Davey, sets some complex problems to challenge our clever mathematicians!  Parents, have a go at working through these two problems with your children – answers in next week’s newsletter.

Problem 1:  Beach Play
A group of children are playing on the beach. They are hopping and jumping along the beach. Each child does three hops followed by one jump. From a standing start, how many footprints in the sand would there be for each child after 10 jumps?

Problem 2: Train Travel
At exactly the same time, two trains depart in opposite directions from the station. One train is moving at a speed of 56 kilometers per hour, while the other is moving at a speed of 64 kilometers per hour. After 3 hours how far apart will they be?

UNIVERSITY OF NSW COMPETITIONS
University of NSW (ICAS) competitions for students in Years 4 – 6 in Science, English and Mathematics are scheduled to be held during Weeks 6 – 8 of Term 3.  Parents who are interested in registering their children for these competitions should look for information in the school newsletter early next term.

ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES
The “Stop-Drop-Go” zones work smoothly when drivers exercise patience by:

  • Moving to the front of the zone before collecting / exiting children from cars.
  • Avoiding turning left into Central Avenue after using the Hawken Drive zone.
  • Arriving at the right times:

Preps (& siblings) – 2:45pm
Year 1 & 2 (& siblings) – 2:50pm
Year 3 & 4 – 2:55pm
Year 5 & 6 – 3:00pm

On rainy days, raincoats are a preferable and safer option with lots of students waiting in the pick-up zones.

    BAND NEWS
WestCent is the district music camp for students from over twenty schools from the western suburbs of Brisbane. Selection into this camp is via audition and it is very competitive. Students can be selected for a 5-day camp (Intermediate Camp) or an overnight camp (Honours Camp). Both camps are very intensive and a for a whole week.

Unfortunately due to COVID-19, the camp has been cancelled this year, however students had already completed a video audition and it was felt that their efforts needed to be recognised. Congratulations to these wonderful Band students on their selection:

    • Dominic J (Intermediate) French Horn
    • James W (Honours) Flute
    • Dylan C (Intermediate) Tuba
    • Genevieve D (Intermediate) Trumpet
    • Dehan W (Intermediate) Trumpet
    • Isaac L (Honours) Tenor Sax
    • Thomas Dixon (Intermediate) Trombone
    • Bria G (Honours) Trombone

    HOME PRACTICE
It is important that all Band students are continuing their home practice (5 practice sessions per week). Regular practice is the only way to see improvement on an instrument. Having a regular time and place to practise is a huge help; sneaking in a practice before school or before homework actually can prime students' brains for learning. Please see several of these benefits of music practice below:
