News from Mr Johnson

Dear Parents,
International Breakfast 2022 Update
The countdown is on for our 2022 International Breakfast on Friday, 17th June….
This is shaping up to be a wonderful community event for our school. Thank you so much to those many families who have already offered to coordinate and/or assist with stalls.
So far we have the following stalls confirmed –
Vietnam, Japan, China, Turkey, Hong Kong/Macau, Indonesia, Iran, Chile, Mexico, Ireland, India, France, Brazil & Paraguay, Sri Lanka, Indigenous Australia, Australia, Croatia, North America, Taiwan and Israel.
- What is International Breakfast?
This is special event which has been held at Ironside SS for many years. It is an opportunity for everyone to share and taste foods representing our many cultural groups across our school community. Stalls are set up by our families representing our many cultural groups and is coordinated by the International Parent Group. Each stall provides a selection of breakfast or snack type foods. 1 voucher is exchanged for 1 serving of food. Everyone is encouraged to wear cultural dress on the day.
- Date – Friday, 17th June, 2022
- Time – 7:15am until 8:45am
- Location – Stalls will be set up in and around the Hall, under the Library basement and the near L block playground. Families usually love to sit on the oval sharing food and time together.
We are strongly encouraging everyone to bring your own containers for food. Some drinks and hot items will still be served in recyclable and heat safe containers.
Vouchers – Vouchers are sold in strips of 3 vouchers and cost $6 per strip. This is a cashless event so vouchers need to be purchased prior to the day.
How to purchase vouchers?
- Vouchers will be on sale (cash and Eftpos) in the OASIS from Wednesday 8th June until Thursday 16th June (before and after school).
- Vouchers will be available for purchase via Qkr from Monday 23rd May until 9am the 6th June. Vouchers will be delivered to the nominated student to bring home
Get involved in Ironside’s community election day activities
Ironside’s P&C is running a sausage sizzle and bake sale on election day, Saturday, 22 May 2022.
Help our local community enjoy a ‘democracy sausage’ and buy some sweet treats after they have voted. The BBQ and stall will be outside the polling centre exit from the hall, near the J block kitchen.
How you can help:
1. Sign up to help on the day.
We are looking for volunteers to work on the BBQ and to serve on the stall. Sign up here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AMNO_BZlZYCj-0dMmGRyUMhW5o5zUeVohU9RL6G5KZw/edit?usp=sharing
2. Bake a cake, slice or biscuits and deliver to the stall on Saturday morning. We’ll be there from 8am.
If you are baking a cake, slice and biscuits, please package up items for sale, and attach a label, listing all ingredients. For ideas of what to bake, check out these ideas:

Any questions, please contact Rob Wootton on 0422 064 469 or robandjac@gmail.com
Uniform Expectations
As we enter the cooler months, it’s timely to remind our families of the expectations around our uniform. If a school jacket or jumper is not possible (and this should be in the rarest of cases) then the required colour of jackets and jumpers is navy blue.
Along with adhering to our school dress code, remember to CLEARLY NAME AND LABEL your child’s uniform pieces.
This is the time of year when we start to see a constant and steady increase in lost property. Should uniform items be handed in, we want to return them to their rightful owners as quickly as possible.
Our school P&C is the endorsing body of our school’s dress code. Wearing our uniform to its highest standard is one visible way we can demonstrate our collective pride in Ironside.
All the very best for the fortnight ahead.
Stay safe and well.
Yours sincerely,
Damian Johnson, Principal.

News from Mr Murdoch

Dear parents and caregivers,
Bridge Builders – Skill of the week (Week 4): Share and Take Turns
Not sharing or not taking turns is often one of the biggest causes of conflict in a home. Helping children to recognise that when they choose this skill there are three benefits for them including:
- They might share with you.
- You become better friends.
- You feel good.
Help your child to practise sharing. You could stay nearby and encourage them so they don’t forget to share. When your child does try to share, be specific with praising what they shared and add ‘You must feel so proud of yourself to be so generous. Well done.’
You can build your child’s sharing skills by watching for and praising good turn-taking, encouraging fairness and explaining about sharing. Simple activities that involve sharing and taking turns like kicking soccer goals or shooting basketball hoops can be helpful. Model sharing in your behaviour with others. At home, look for opportunities to share things with your partner. When you and your friends are together, make a point of sharing and describe it as you do so. Young children are great observers and imitators.
Bridge Builders - Skill of the week (Week 5): Talk and Listen
Positive communication skills are essential for good relationships. Listening is a learned skill, and through focused and directed efforts, parents can teach their children and themselves better listening and speaking habits.
Listen to your children in the way you like to be listened to. Be a good role model by hearing things in their words and making them feel important while they are talking to you. Since they sense when you’re not listening, they’re much more apt to listen to you when you listen to them.
Tone of voice and facial expression are important aspects of positive communication as well - our tone and expression can speak as loudly as our words.

Around the classrooms – Prep:
In Prep E we have been learning about Fairy tales. As a class, we thought about our personal connections to the story. We considered the events or feelings of the text and then thought about what it reminded us of in our lives. We have spent time reflecting on the story elements and the words needed to construct sentences about the fairy tales.

In Maths we have been exploring how numbers can be made in a variety of ways. We used bee bots to connect numerals, quantities and number words.

Around the classrooms – Year 1:
What are we learning in English? Answered by the wonderful students in Year 1.
Jun – A character description. We have to do some detail about the character we are learning in the book. Have to do capital letters and full stops.
Amy – We are labelling characters by how they look like.
Min – We use nouns and verbs. We use capital letters, full stops.
Raha – We are learning about characters. We are writing about the character’s feelings and how they look like.
Esther – We look at the characters inside and outside.

Around the classrooms – Year 2:
In HASS this term the Year 2 students are taking a virtual trip around Australia. Students are learning about maps and are beginning to record useful information onto these maps. They have been recording the capital city, natural and manmade landmarks in each state or territory. Students are now starting to write riddles, giving clues about such landmarks.
Here is one for you to solve.
- I am in the Northern Territory.
- I am South of Darwin.
- I am a natural landmark.
- I am a monolith.
- I am visited by thousands of tourists each year.
What am I?

You guessed it… I am Uluru.
Kind regards,
Scott Murdoch

Year 4 Walk the Tarcoola Track
This week has seen the Year 4 classes walk the Tarcoola Track as part of their ‘Beneath our Feet’ Science unit. The learning experiences from this excursion aim to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of erosion in our local area. A big thank you to the year 4 teachers and all of the parent volunteers that made this excursion possible.

News from Year 3
During English lessons, our Year 3 students are studying the art of persuasion. Part of this process has seen teachers co-constructing success criteria with their class. This allows the teacher to gain an in-depth understanding of how the students are progressing and it also helps students to understand what it is they need to do to ensure they’re producing their best work.

EcoMarines
On Tuesday 3/5, our newly elected EcoMarine ambassadors visited Tangalooma Island Resort to complete their training. EcoMarines inspire and empower students to become conservation leaders.
The programs and events enable students and teachers to network with other schools, connect with local businesses, and learn from traditional owners and industry experts.
Our student ambassadors encourage the school network to identify and tackle challenges impacting their local community in a fun and creative way. These passionate students are creating a wave of environmental change.
I would like to acknowledge the amazing work of Ms Wightwick in this space. She has given up an extraordinary amount of her own time to get the EcoMarines program up and running at Ironside. Thank you, Ms Wightwick!
Kind regards

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
“The Junior Strings orchestra 2022 has hit the ground running with a half day workshop on Wednesday and their very first rehearsal this Friday morning with Ms Todd and Ms Helen. The students played well in their workshop exploring tuning, bowing patterns and playing together as a group. They played 3 pieces from their Blue strings book, including Hot Cross Buns from memory! The students enjoyed being creative and making music together.” – Miss Todd

Workshops are also being held for all other strings groups during this week. These workshops are aimed to support our ensembles to prepare for upcoming performances. All groups will be competing at Fanfare at Centenary State High School on Thursday 2 June.
YEAR 6 SOLAR BUDDIES
Last week our Year 6 students engaged in building Solar Buddy renewable energy lights to send to children around the world who are experiencing energy poverty. This was an exciting and engaging start to their work in Science and HASS and is a project that we hope will form an ongoing part of our Year 6 studies into the future. For more information please go to: https://solarbuddy.org/

Music News
Music Dates for rest of Term
Just a quick reminder of the music dates for the rest of the term. Please be aware that a few assembly dates have changed.

QSO Excursion

On Wednesday 4th May we went to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) performance at QPAC. It was an inspiring experience. The songs/pieces they played were amazing. The musicians worked together to create a strong and unified sound. The songs that QSO played were very famous such as Jaws, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Hedwig’s theme and much more. The musicians wore costumes of characters from the pieces they played which added a bit of humour to the performance. Some of the musicians wore shark costumes, some dressed up as storm troopers and dinosaurs. The special effects also added to the performance. All in all, it was an inspiring experience.

In May the 4th, we went to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. The pieces that they played were film music. The orchestra took us on a journey through some of the most popular pieces that were played in films which were composed by John Williams. Some of the pieces they played were Jaws (main theme), Superman march, Star Wars and Hedwigs theme. All these pieces were fun to listen to, and overall, this was a really fun and inspiring experience.
Emily L
This year, on May the 4th, all music ensembles gathered to listen to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra at QPAC. I enjoyed listening to lots of different genres of music and movies i.e. Harry Potter, Star Wars, E.T, Superman etc. If I could, I would go back again with my family and friends. I also liked being with all the music groups other than just choir and band. Daisy and I found it very entertaining that everyone who was performing dressed up to match the songs played.
Susannah L
FANFARE
It is very exciting that the Fanfare Festival is on again this year. It was cancelled in 2022 so it has been 4 years since we have had this festival. Fanfare is the biennial state-wide festival of bands and orchestras from Queensland state schools. It showcases the exciting music-making that occurs in school-based ensembles across the state. The emphasis for Fanfare is on improving the quality of ensembles, promoting the highest possible standard of performance, striving for excellence and encouraging participation.
The Chamber, Senior, Intermediate Strings and Senior and Intermediate Bands are participating in Week 7 on Thursday the 2nd of June. We will be traveling by bus to Centenary State High School however family and friends are welcome to attend as audience. There will be a canteen there on the day selling a range of products including softdrinks, water, juice, chocolate bars. Cash or eftpos available. We will NOT be allowing students to purchase so please don’t pack money.
Chamber Strings, Intermediate Strings and Senior Band need to meet before school in the Oasis at by 8:20am. Senior Strings, Intermediate Band will meet at the Oasis at first break.
A letter has been sent home and there is a permission form to return so please bring this back to the office or your teacher as soon as you can and keep practicing hard.
Junior Choirs Update from Mrs Huxley
Piccole Voci - Year 1 Choir
Voci Dei Bambini - Year 2 Choir
Both of our Junior Choirs have enrolments in the mid-60’s! It’s fantastic to see so many children take an interest in the Performing Arts at Ironside!
Here are some helpful reminders for the Junior Choirs:
Rehearsal Times:
Year 1 - first break Tuesdays
Year 2 - first break Wednesdays
Upcoming performance:
Friday, 24 June (week 10) at 10:15am in our school hall. This will be a mini-soiree and is expected to take no more than 20-30 minutes. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend.
Remember that feeling scared or nervous about performing is completely normal!
Music:
Vocal Scores have been emailed to families, and the children are welcome to print and keep their music in a folder. This is encouraged, as then they can rehearse at home or with friends.
Commitment & Attendance at Rehearsals:
Commitment to the team and commitment to rehearsals during lunch and play time is very important. If your little person repeatedly forgets to attend rehearsals, perhaps a note in their lunchbox could be helpful. Check in with your child at the end of their rehearsal day, to see what we are working on and if they need some support with their attendance.
First Break Food:
Packing food that is quick and easy to eat, as well as not too messy is preferred. Messy food such as rice often end up all over the carpet.
News from Chappy Thu
Dear Families,
So here we are, half way through the term and like many other areas of our community, Chaplaincy is also finding its feet again. This term, we are focusing on break time activities and clubs as well as small group programs such as Connect, which focuses on fostering friendships and other meaningful connections. Engagement and participation in the activities have steadily grown over the weeks and it’s been wonderful getting to know the students beyond the classroom.

Beyond this term, our wonderful Chaplaincy Committee is also looking at bringing back events to celebrate our amazing community. Look out for:
Father’s Day Breakfast to celebrate all our amazing father figures – Friday, 26th August
Gingerbread House Night for families to build their sweet dream house – Thursday, 1st December
Also, next week is Chappy Week

To celebrate Chappy week, we will be having a Silly Sock Day on Friday, 27th of May. No donations needed, just a bit of fun for the end of the week. We will also have special activities on during our usual Clubs 😊

And that’s all the news for this week! If you would like to find out more about Chaplaincy, to subscribe to Chappy Tips or if you would like to support Chaplaincy through volunteering or donations, please email me at tklet0@eq.edu.au
Until next time,
Chappy Thu
Bookfair
Bookfair is now happening in week 7. It will be a different format from the regular bookfair because of the repair work being done in the library. Bookfair will supply cases that contain one copy of each item and the students will browse through these and create their wishlist. They will then order online or bring $ to me and I will order online. There won't be any buying directly from the fair this time.
Each class will come through in their current library time unless I have seen you and you have chosen another time (Year 4- 6) Only Prep and Year 1 teachers need to come with the class this time.
This is bookfair and not dress up Book week.
Can you ask your students not to return books when they come to browse the fair as this is the week I will be upgrading from Alice to Infinity and there won't be any circulation. Hopefully this process goes smoothly!!
Thanks
Cath

Turkish Lessons
Turkish Lessons commenced at Ironside State School in week 1 Term 2.
It was a pleasure to meet our students for the first time. I was excited as much as they were.
We spent two lessons getting to know each other, how to greet one another and talk about ourselves.
Our lessons concluded with a visit from the Australian Turkish Ambassador and Honorary Consulate meeting the children.
Lessons will continue to be held at Ironside State school for students from Years 1 to 6 every Thursday from 4:30pm to 5:30pm
