International Breakfast 2022

The countdown continues to our 2022 International Breakfast on Friday, 17th June….

This is shaping up to be a wonderful community event for our school. Thank you so much to those families who have already offered to coordinate and/or assist with stalls.

So far we have the following stalls confirmed –

Vietnam, Japan, China, Turkey, Hong Kong/Macau, Indonesia, Iran, Chile, Mexico, Ireland, India, France, Paraguay & Brazil, Sri Lanka, Indigenous Australia, Australia, Croatia, North America, Taiwan, Bolivia, Venezuela & Colombia, Israel, United Kingdom, Bangladesh, Madagascar, South Africa and Greece.

If you are interested in either coordinating or helping on a stall, please contact Kylie Sommerfeld (ksomm2@eq.edu.au) by the end of this week.   If your nationality is missing, maybe you would like to consider organising a stall – the students love to see their nationalities represented!

We are strongly encouraging everyone to bring your own containers for food.  Some drinks and hot items will still be served in recyclable and heat safe containers.

Vouchers – Vouchers are sold in strips of 3 vouchers and cost $6 per strip.  This is a cashless event so vouchers need to be purchased prior to the day.

How to purchase vouchers?

  • Vouchers will be on sale (cash and Eftpos) in the OASIS from Wednesday 8th June until Thursday 16th June (before and after school).
  • Vouchers are available for purchase via Qkr. Vouchers will then be delivered to your nominated student to bring home. Qkr voucher sales will cease on Thursday 16th June at 9am to allow for voucher distribution.

All the very best for the fortnight ahead.

Stay safe and well.

Yours sincerely,

Damian Johnson, Principal.

Bridge Builders – Skill of the week (Week 6): Be Kind

Teaching children to be kind to someone who they have been in conflict with seems like an oxymoron.  Often, a child’s natural instinct when they have been hurt is to hurt back.

Kindness in conflict is unexpected and it can be the opposite to what someone expects.  This can mean that they struggle to continue to be mean.   Learning to be kind when we are hurt starts with how we think about the other person.  It can require empathy and encourages children to be brave enough to be the hero in a problem.

Acts of kindness release hormones that make us feel calmer, healthier and happier.  They can also be contagious.

Bridge Builders - Skill of the week (Week 7): Make an Agreement

We all know that there are differences and disagreements in all relationships. Therefore, it is logical that how you resolve these disagreements will be critical to the on-going success of those relationships.

Sometimes in a conflict there is common ground. This is something that both children want that is the same. An argument can become complicated by continued hurtful behaviours. Asking children “What do you both want that is the same?” can stop the bickering and help them to focus on what the original problem was and lead them to make an agreement.

Try to remain neutral if you can and let your kids sort it out with your help. Remember that conflict is not bad, it’s an everyday part of life and a great opportunity to learn.

Winter Clothing:

Now that the weather is becoming cooler, there is the need for warmer items of clothing here at school.  Ironside State School is classed as a uniform school. We seek parent’s co-operation in ensuring that the children wear the uniform to school, and to school events, and particularly that the uniform be worn as a complete ensemble and not mixed with other garments. The wearing of the uniform assists to maintain tone within the school, gives the child a sense of belonging and also eliminates undesirable competition in dress. The following dress code is the standard for Ironside State School students:

Could all Prep – Year 2 parents please ensure that names and labels are clearly written on jackets and jumpers to ensure they can be returned to their rightful owner.

This is also another opportunity for our junior students to take ownership and responsibility for their belongings and further develop their skills in this area.

*REMINDER – Before and After School Routines

Students who arrive before 8:55am, and are not booked into Before School Care, are required to move directly their designated waiting area until the first bell rings:

  • Preps – line up in front of their classroom
  • Years 1 & 2 – under G Block

Formal supervision in these waiting areas begins at 8:30am.

At the end of the day, Prep classes make their way to the Grassy Patch at 3:00pm.  Year 1 & 2 students are dismissed from their classrooms and are to meet parents/siblings on the Grassy Patch or make their way to the appropriate departure zone.

Prep children are to wait until their known adult or sibling arrives to collect. Once collected, students are to wait beside the responsible person.

It is expected that children follow school routines and not play games or use playground equipment before and after school.

As a matter of safety and a sign of respect to the rest of the Ironside community using these spaces, we would appreciate your support in reminding our junior school students of the “Right place, right time, right way”.

Around the classrooms – Prep:

The Prep children have been participating in gymnastics this term in HPE. They have practised fundamental movement skills and movement sequences using different body parts on gym equipment. Through these activities, children are learning balance and coordination.

These skills are important in the classroom. The physical attributes of balance and coordination help and contribute to appropriate posture for table activities and success with fine motor tasks. Gymnastics is so beneficial and so much fun for the children. Thanks Mrs English!

Around the classrooms – Year 1:

In 1A we are learning to write invitations for Prep D to come to the book fair.  We practiced on a different sheet, we looked at what makes a good invitation and decided on everything we needed to include. We had to remember to include the date, time, where it was and make it colourful.  We had to write who it was to, and who it was from.  We needed to make it clear and easy to read. Some people even included a map to show the Preppies how to get to the library.  Others made a count down so they could cross out the days each night.

We are also learning to use our Bridge builder skill of taking turns.  We say things like:

- “Would you like to go first”,

- “Can I go first?”,

- “Can I have a turn when you are finished?”

In Maths, we are learning all about subtraction.  We are learning to use different strategies to solve the subtraction problems like: friends of ten, doubles facts and using a number line and counters.  We are having lots of fun making up some of our own word problems. Here are some of them:

  • There were 10 dingoes and 3 of them got eaten. How many dingoes are left?
  • There were 20 pages in a workbook and somebody used 4 pages. How many blank pages are left?
  • There were 10 foxes and 7 went off hunting. How many foxes were left?
  • There were 8 hedgehogs and 4 went away. How many hedgehogs are left?

Around the classrooms – Year 2:

Throughout this term, the Year Two students have been exploring the elements of Drama through Reader’s Theatre. We have found that our voice, facial expressions and movements help us to portray different characters. We have greatly enjoyed watching each other perform!

Kind regards,

Scott Murdoch

Around the Classrooms

Year 3

Students in 3F have been learning about how to include tension in their writing. Please see an amazing example below from Helen R.

Our HASS unit this term has seen students learning about different celebrations and commemorations. This unit was integrated with the English learning area where students had to plan, draft, edit and publish a text to persuade their classmates to participate in their favourite celebration or commemoration.

Year 4

This term in HASS, students have investigated before, during and after the First Fleet’s arrival in Australia through the following inquiry question: How does the past shape the future?

  • Please some of their fantastic poster presentations below:

Languages

Japanese

"In 1846, Amabie emerged from the ocean and spoke in human language, predicting six years of good harvests, followed by a wave of diseases," says Kazuhiko Komatsu, an emeritus professor at the International Research Centre for Japanese Studies in Kyoto. The creature advised: "Draw me and show to the people, so that you can be free from disease," Komatsu says.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Amabie became a popular topic on social media in Japan. Artists and ordinary people shared their Amabie creations with their communities. Year 6 students joined in this semester by creating their own Amabie to share with our community. Please enjoy.

Spanish

In year 5 (Spanish) students prepared a conversation with their friends to share personal information and interests and express preferences. Please see the link below:

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR MATHS TEAM CHALLENGERS!!

Last Friday, three Maths teams represented Ironside at the Maths Team Challenge event held at Indooroopilly State High.  These teams competed against schools from all across our region.  They have been working hard and practising problem solving applying abstract reasoning, and most importantly – working towards solutions as a team.  From all of the teams across Brisbane two of our three teams received a place (2nd and 3rd).  This is an outstanding achievement and evidence of the hard work and commitment of the students and teachers.  Special thanks and mention to Mr Henderson, Miss Pagliaro, Mr Aprile and Mrs Lee who accompanied the teams on the day and helped them prepare for their success.

MUSIC SOIREES

Over the next three weeks we will be holding three musical soirees for our choral (Years 3 – 6), band and strings groups.

These events are an exciting opportunity for the students to perform for their family and community.

With the support of the P&C and our Music Parent Reps, we are pleased to advise there will be meals available for families on all three evenings.

A local restaurant, Papparich, will be catering for these evenings – with options including curry chicken, vegetarian curry and steamed baos.  All meals are nut-free.

These meals can only be purchased through the QKR app, and are available for pre-purchase NOW.  There will not the option to purchase meals on the evening.

Please see below the corresponding dates for these evenings, and the cut off for meal pre-orders on QKR:

All soirees commence at 6pm.  Food service will be available from 5pm at the J Block kitchen (next to the school hall).

Students need to arrive for rehearsals at 5.15pm, giving them a quarter of an hour to eat their meals, if parents choose to purchase something for them.

We look forward to seeing you on these evenings, and hope you enjoy your meals!

Our Junior Choirs will have their concert at 10.15am on Friday 24 June.  Parents are welcome and should check emails from Mrs Huxley for more detail.

MUSIC EVENTS THIS WEEK

This is a busy week for our Music groups.  Tomorrow, all instrumental groups will compete at Centenary State High in the Fanfare competition.  In addition our Voci Musicali choir will be performing at St Peter’s Lutheran College as part of the Queensland Youth Music Awards, in the evening.  We wish you well at these events, and we know you will do Ironside proud!  Please be sure to check your emails from Ms Weekes, Mrs Allely and Mrs K for arrival times and uniform requirements.

In accordance with Qld School Sport guidelines, only 10, 11 & 12 year old students are eligible for district nomination, therefore our younger students will not be disadvantaged by the decision to exclude these events from their program. Thank you for your understanding.

Any student wishing to qualify for district 1500m must attend the trials on the morning of Tuesday, June 7th at 7:45am at Jack Cook Park.  This event is solely for district nomination and is not associated with the carnival and does not count towards age champion.

Food and Eating Times

Where in the past there has been a dedicated lunch time, this year we will be removing this in the interests of keeping the flow of the day going and saving time.  Students will have multiple opportunities to snack or eat lunch during both the field event and running portions of the day.  There will be a canteen this year, although certain items like lollies and soft drinks will not be made available to the students to purchase.  There will be cold water available throughout the day from various points in the stands and around the field event facilities.  Parents will have access to the Saint Lucy Caffe e Cucina which is just a short walk away.

Thank you very much for your continued support of your child and the health and physical education department at Ironside.

Music Dates for rest of Term

Just a quick reminder of the music dates for the rest of the term.

Choral, Strings and Band Soiree

Our end of semester concerts will be happening over the next few weeks starting with the Choral Soiree in Week 8, Strings in Week 9 and Band in Week 9.  These concerts will be a hour or so of fantastic music by the amazing Ironside chorister’s and musicians.  Please prioritise these dates if you are in these groups as these celebrations of our work are an important part of the program.

We are also having dinner available on the evening thanks to the hard work and ideas for Mr Rob Wootton who has source some wonderful local food.  You pre-order your menu via the Qkr app and collect on the evening.  This will be a beautiful addition to our wonderful nights.  Come along, eat some yummy food and catch up with some of the other Ironside music parents and enjoy some amazing music.

Choral Soiree   - Tuesday 7th June                   - arrive from 5pm

Strings Soiree  - Wednesday 15th June           - arrive from 5pm

Band Soiree     - Tuesday 21st June                 - arrive from 5pm

Junior Strings Extragavanza

Our beginner string students are off to Sherwood State school for the day on Wednesday 15th June.  Our day starts at 8:30am and finishes with a concert at 2pm and students need to be collected by 2:30pm.  We will work with students from Jindalee SS, Sherwood SS, Graceville SS, and Corinda SS.  It will a very fun day with lots of music and games together.  We look forward to parents coming to hear our fantastic concert at 2pm.

Queensland Youth Orchestra Concert

The families of students from Ironside were offered the opportunity to purchase $10 tickets to the Queensland Youth Orchestra.  One of our wonderful year 4’s has written us a paragraph about her experience of the concert.

On the 28th of May, the Queensland Youth Orchestra played at QPAC and lots of Ironside families went because we were offered $10 tickets for the concert. The orchestra was very good, the first song they played was called Present, Past and Future. It had three movements, the 2nd movement was best because it sounded angry and dramatic. It was a song composed by Australian Nicole Murphy especially for the Youth Orchestra to play. There were two other works written by Richard Strauss, the pieces were interesting because sometimes not only did the leader of the section have a solo sometimes other players in the strings sections had solos too.

WestCent Audition Results

Congratulations to the student who completed WestCent auditions this year.  Our Ironside auditions were completed at a very high standard.  30 String Players and 4 Band students received a place at the 2022 camps.  To explain how fantastic our string results are; there are approx. 20 school involved in these camps and 19% of the strings camps will be students from Ironside, a truly outstanding achievement.  Well done students!

SHEP

We wish Nathan S and Katelyn L well for their participation in the SHEP Middle school this weekend.  They will rehearse in their allocated ensemble for the weekend culminating in a concert on Sunday evening.  Congratulations and play well!

News from Chappy Thu

Dear Families,

We’ve had another fun packed two weeks at Ironside with an election, instrumental rehearsals, athletics try outs & even Chappy Week!

Chappy Week

To celebrate Chappy Week at Ironside, we had a Silly Sock Day, a sweet treat platter for staff, made origami puppets for friends, had a balloon party at Chappy Lounge, then danced & dressed up at Disco Club with glow bracelets!

We also had a colouring in competition! In my old age, I’d forgotten how long it takes to colour & as it turned out, 15 mins was definitely not enough to complete the page! However, I loved how the students persisted & accepted that their work was beautiful, even if they felt it wasn’t complete. It was hard to choose, but the winner for this year is Chelsea Zhang from year 4. I loved all the different colours she used & how focused she was when colouring (she didn’t even hear the bell!). Congratulations!

Lastly, I’d like to share a little bit about what chaplains do, and more specifically, what I do as the chaplain at Ironside.

FAQ

What is a Chaplain?

Chaplains in schools provide students and staff with social, emotional and spiritual support. They also provide an additional adult role model in the school and enhance engagement with the broader community, including parents.

Who is Ironside’s Chaplain?

That would be me! Thu Klett (commonly known as Chappy Thu) J

What Chaplaincy Services are there at Ironside?

Chaplaincy Services at Ironside are flexible & designed to provide support where it is most needed. This year, term 1 was focused on rotating through classrooms to get to know the new students, new class dynamics & new teachers as well as casual activities during break times. Based on observations from Term 1, Term 2 is now focused on formal Clubs & Programs. This term we have:

All the activities have been increasingly popular with up to 70 students coming per session last week. This is a lot of students for me, so for the remaining weeks of this term, I will be capping attendance to around 30. For next term, I will be establishing a ‘Chappy Squad’ consisting of older students who are interested in helping out as well as sourcing more volunteers. On that note, if you are interested in helping me supervise, monitor activities, signing in students or setting up, please email me at tklet0@eq.edu.au. Thank you!

I also have a Chappy Mailbox (which my husband built) that students use to write notes and suggestions as well as to share drawings and origami. I attempt to reply to each note weekly, which was easy the first few weeks, but currently I’m getting around 40 notes a week!

In between these events, I also run a small group Friendship Program & offer individual support to students who have been referred to me.

Who does the Chaplain support?

Unlike other support roles at school, my role supports not only students but also staff and parents. I regularly bake, provide treats and write notes for the staff as encouragement through the term. Last year, one of the initiatives was to provide a free coffee to staff during report writing week to help them through the long days and late nights. These coffees were generously sponsored by the amazing Briki Café!

I have supported parents who have found themselves in unexpectedly challenging situations with care packages, chats & letters of encouragement. I also offered extra support to classes and teachers when faced and with difficult times. During the COVID outbreak last year, I organised care packages to families in hospital as well as basic food deliveries to families who had to wait up to 7 days to get their usual groceries. I also made origami videos, which were uploaded to the Ironside YouTube channel for students who were missing Origami Club as well as students who were looking for a fun activity to do at home.

Ironside is a large school and I don’t always hear or see everything that happens, but I am always willing to help whenever anything comes my way.

Which days do you work?

Currently I work two days a week, Thursday & Friday from 8am to 4pm.

For those who do not know, the government funds a chaplain for one day a week. Every extra day of chaplaincy is funded through the community. We aim to raise $8,000 a year to continue our two-day service. If you would like to contribute, please come to, volunteer at or donate to our upcoming events:

  • Father’s Day Breakfast – Friday, August 26th
  • Gingerbread Making Night – Thursday, December 1st

Or you can directly make a donation to the Ironside Chaplaincy Fund via this link:

https://www.suqld.org.au/donate/ironside-ss-chaplaincy-tax-deductible/

If you have further questions or would like to volunteer to help, please contact me at tklet0@eq.edu.au. If you would like more information about Chaplains or Chappy Week, please visit: www.chappyweek.org.au

Until Next Time,

Chappy Thu

News from the P&C

Thank you to our two newest members who attended our General Meeting Tuesday evening, 31st May, and joined Ironside P&C. We had a nice turn out of existing members, Ironside and community leaders and Ironside staff and had a lively discussion about Ironside school and P&C matters and events. We voted to change the General Meetings from the last Tuesday of the month (not including Holidays) to the last Thursday of the month, beginning with our next General Meeting, Thursday, 28th July. We are looking at providing childcare as an option to increase attendance and participation. More to come.

Again, thank you to our new and existing P&C members for your time and input. We welcome and encourage all Ironside parents, staff and community to come along.

Healthy Living Triple P is an adaptation of the successful Triple P - Positive Parenting Program, offering practical ideas and support for parents of children with eczema. This innovative online program is designed to help parents manage their child’s eczema more easily, help children cope with their eczema and emotions, prevent and manage difficult child behaviour, and reduce the impact of eczema on families.

Over the next few months, parents of 2-10 year old children with eczema are able to access Healthy Living Triple P free of charge as part of a research project through the Queensland Children’s Hospital, Griffith University, and the University of Queensland. Turkish Lessons

Turkish Lessons commenced at Ironside State School in week 1 Term 2.

It was a pleasure to meet our students for the first time. I was excited as much as they were.

We spent two lessons getting to know each other, how to greet one another and talk about ourselves.

Our lessons concluded with a visit from the Australian Turkish Ambassador and Honorary Consulate meeting the children.

Lessons will continue to be held at Ironside State school for students from Years 1 to 6 every Thursday from  4:30pm to 5:30pm

Regards, Turkish Language Teacher
