29 July 2022 - Term 3, Week 2
News from Mr Johnson

Dear Parents,
School Council Meeting
Our next (rescheduled) meeting is approaching on Monday 1st August – 5:30pm in the Staff Room. If any members of the School Council are unable to attend please make either myself or Mr Rob Wootton (Chair) aware of your apology.
Uniform Expectations
As we enter the cooler months, it’s timely to remind our families of the expectations around our uniform. If a school jacket or jumper is not possible (and this should be in the rarest of cases) then the required colour of jackets and jumpers is navy blue.
Along with adhering to our school dress code, remember to CLEARLY NAME AND LABEL your child’s uniform pieces.
This is the time of year when we start to see a constant and steady increase in lost property. Should uniforms items be handed in, we want to return them to their rightful owners as quickly as possible.
2022 – Bridge to Brisbane
As a part of our spotlight on rebuilding community connections during 2022 – we have established an Ironside State School ‘team’ for this year’s Bridge to Brisbane fun run.
Event details can be found here https://bridgetobrisbane.com.au/
Anyone can join the team, we are called "Ironside State School" and they need to enter the pin 1045 when they join.
Participants of the team can nominate to walk or run either the 4.5km or 10km.
As we get closer to the date, we’ll nominate a coffee shop, park (or similar) for those who may like to socialise after the run.
Sincere thanks to Hanorah Wallace for setting up the Ironside State School team.
National Swimming Carnival 2022
This year, the School Sport Australia National swimming carnival will be hosted by Queensland at the Chandler Aquatic Centre.
Congratulations to Rosie Z 5A, (pictured below with Louie C at the State Championships) who has progressed through the Representative School Sport Pathway to the highest level of representation. Rosie is a member of the Queensland Swimming Team competing at the National Carnival next month.
Well done Rosie! We are very proud of you.

Ironside P&C supports State and National level student representatives
A reminder to our families that the Ironside P&C provides financial support to families when their child makes representative school sport teams at the State and National level.
The Ironside SS P&C has acknowledged for a number of years, the financial commitment involved to send children to State and National carnivals.
If your child represents Metropolitan West at a State Championship, the P&C will support your child with $100 towards the cost of the Championship Levy.
If your child represents Queensland at a National Championship, the P&C will support your child with $250 towards the cost of the Championship Levy.
This is processed through me (School Principal) and taken to the next monthly P&C meeting for ratification.
All the best to our families for the fortnight ahead.
Stay safe and well.
Damian Johnson, Principal.

News from Mr Murdoch

Dear parents and caregivers,
Bridge Builders – Skill of the week (Week 2): Nature of Conflict
Conflict can be defined as a problem, a disagreement or a fight. It can be physical, verbal or indirect, with a reference to winning or losing. Actions that present during conflict can be grouped into behaviours that hurt physically, and behaviours that hurt emotionally – hurting feelings and creating emotional pain. The impetus for conflict may be deliberate, accidental or perceived but, predominately, conflict has its basis in unmet needs.
In classrooms, playgrounds, homes and sports fields, children are going to wrestle with the pain, discomfort and uncertainties related to conflict. How they respond plays a part in determining their ability to grow into confident, respectful and problem-solving citizens.
“Empowered for Life”; Jocelyne Chirnside
At Ironside, we take a positive, solutions-focused approach and stay low on the ladder of inference. In all interactions, please mindful of assumptions being made or getting caught up in emotions, particularly around the perspectives of younger children.
The best thing parents can do when conflict is reported at home is to apply an adult lens and filter the information: Step back, listen, investigate if necessary or see this as an opportunity for personal growth.
How we respond as adults and manage emotions in this space plays a critical role in developing and building a child’s resilience.
There are systems, structures and processes in place to support individuals and the general population, both academically and socially. Your classroom teacher should be your first point of call. Conversations of this nature also need to remain between you and the classroom teacher. They are the people who know your children best and what has occurred during the day.

Around the classrooms – Prep:
This term in Science the Preps are exploring materials. We have been engaging in hands on learning activities to help them understand how materials help shape our world. One highlight has been going on scavenger hunts around the classroom to find different types of materials and then sorting them in to categories based on their properties.

Around the classrooms – Year 1:
This term in Year 1 we are learning how to write retells of stories. Our goal is to make our retells both informative and entertaining for the reader. In 1E we wrote retells about the traditional Dreamtime tale ‘How the birds got their colours’. We analysed some ‘Ravishing Retells’ from the class to look at what made them both informative and entertaining. This has helped us to come up with a criteria for makes a ravishing retell!

Around the classrooms – Year 2:
In HASS, the Year 2s have begun to investigate sites of significance beginning with the Ekka Showgrounds. Throughout the term, the Year 2s will develop their skills in questioning, researching, analysing and communicating as they investigate each site.

CONGRATULATIONS
Jimel in Year 1, won first place in the Beginner category at the Brisbane Piano Festival on Sunday (19th June 2022).
Congratulations Jimel!

Kind regards,
Scott Murdoch

Year 4 Camp – Tangalooma
We’re only 5 weeks away from embarking on our camp to Tangalooma. Permission forms and waivers were sent home last week and invoices went out this week. I’d like to invite parents to an information evening all about camp on Thursday, 18th August in the school hall at 5:45pm. This is an opportunity to hear about all things camp and to ask any questions. You’re also welcome to email any questions to me before that date (pdave16@eq.edu.au).
Over the next couple of weeks, a ‘What to bring’ form and information about medication will be sent home. Please read these forms carefully.
I have received some questions about which boxes to circle on the Tangalife Waiver (pictured below), please only circle ‘Snorkel’ and ‘equipment Hire’.

Kind Regards,

Dear parents and caregivers,
CAMP REMINDERS

Please note these final important reminders to help the experience run smoothly:
- Meet your Classroom Teacher on the Grassy Patch no later than 8am on Monday 1 August. (6D please report to Mr Aprile)

- Students who have Ventolin puffers and Epi-pens will be required to keep this in their day activity back pack. The school also provides supplementary supplies of these medications, which are located at a central location on the campsite.
- Do not send or provide Panadol or Nurofen. The school has adequate supplies to provide this. If this is required, parents will be contacted by phone.
- Pack enough clothes to allow for cool and wet conditions.
- Pack plastic bags for wet / dirty clothes and shoes.
- Include a small back pack for daytime activities (used to carry water bottles / insect repellent etc)
- Do not bring: electronic devices, watches, jewellery, expensive items.
- Ensure your child is able to carry their own luggage as they will need to manage it independently at camp.
- We will be arriving back at school for pick up on the Grassy Patch at 3pm on Friday 5 August.
- Keep updated by following the school’s Facebook page.
Students who are attending school during camp will be supervised in Year 5 classrooms. They need to report to Mrs Fairhall (who will be in the 5B classroom) each morning, so she can mark them off the morning roll.

Department of Education International Conference
Last Monday the Chamber Strings performed at the Department of Education International (DEI) Conference at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC). They performed beautifully and represented our school exceptionally. It was amazing to see our students once again rise to the challenge.
Reflections for the year 6 students:
“Today we went to the DEI Conference at BCEC. This was a very inspiring experience for all of us. Along with the Chamber Strings Orchestra, the two grade 6 quartets (SY6A and SY6B) played spectacularly. Though we had a small audience, our performance was sensational and inspiring according to the principals of other schools. After nearly an hour of playing, Chamber Strings was awarded with some snacks including chocolate mousse and cheesecakes. Overall, Chamber Strings did an amazing job and are preparing hard for the upcoming State Finals”.
Sophie K, Yr 6 student.
“Last Monday, we went to an international Leadership Conference, held in Griffith University. At the conference chamber Strings Performed Trepak from the nutcracker, the OG storm rider, deep river and river song. At the conference, multiple Lesson Groups were also asked to perform. SY6A and B. After our performance, the very kind staff offered us a meal at a prepared buffet, which was probably the highlight of everyone’s day. This was a less prestigious performance that allowed Chamber to take a nice break before the upcoming states competition”.
Layla C, Yr 6 student.
Choral News
