Dear parents and caregivers,
Bridge Builders – Skill of the week: Feelings and Calming down
Children do choose their behaviour but they do not choose their feelings, and it is their feelings and thinking that influence them the most. This highlights the importance of teaching children to understand their feelings and to be given skills in calming down.
If your child sees you expressing your feelings in a positive way, over time they learn to do the same. Be sure to model appropriate ways to express feelings to your child. Children are like sponges – they soak everything up.
Our thinking can change our feelings, behaviours and the words we say. Listening to our self-talk and thoughts when we are upset and avoiding unhelpful, toxic thoughts and instead thinking helpful positive thoughts can be a very powerful calming tool.

Around the classrooms – Prep:
Prep C celebrated 100 days of Prep on Monday 1st August. We were very excited as we have been keeping tally of how many days we have been at school since we started Prep. Finally, we made it to 100! We spent a day doing lots of fun activities based around the number 100, like drawing 100 eyes on a monster, building towers with 100 paper cups, making hats decorated with 100 pieces of collage and building with 100 pieces of Lego. In HPE we made a 100 out of our bodies! We ended the day with a beautiful cake made by Mrs Pearl, decorated with 100 flowers. Now we are 100 days smarter and ready to learn even more.

Around the classrooms – Year 1:
Year 1 students are learning about places and their features. In 1D, students have collaboratively created posters to represent the natural, managed and constructed features in local places. In teams, they then presented their findings to the class and defined each category. The next step is to investigate how places and their features change or stay the same!

Around the classrooms – Year 2:
The students in Year 2 have been actively engaged in maths rotations. Activities have included playdough fractions, place value bingo, time monsters, two-digit subtraction cards, multiplication arrays and more. These activities have provided students with hands on activities and helped them consolidate their learning. The children look forward to these activities each week and enjoy working collaboratively with each other. Year 2 have loved combining their maths and ICT skills together. This term they have been using the app called Number Pieces, to develop a deeper understanding of place value.

Kind regards,
Scott Murdoch
Deputy Principal P-2

What’s been happening in Year 3?
Our Year 3 students have been lucky enough to have experienced a Street Science incursion and an excursion to the Brisbane Museum.
Street Science Incursion
This term, students are investigating how heat energy is produced and the behaviour of heat when it transfers from one object or area to another. The team from Street Science provided many opportunities for students to get hands on and start experimenting in this space, Check out the images below!

Excursion to Brisbane Museum
In HASS this semester, students have been investigating the aspects of their community that have changed and remained the same over time. To help with their inquiry, students visited the Brisbane museum to discover how Brisbane has changed. Some students were even lucky enough to meet the Lord Mayor.

What’s happening in Year 4?
Solving the same problem 4 ways?! It sounds crazy, but the students in 4A have been showing that they can think about and solve equations in different ways. Ryan Song and Alice McClymont have shown excellent use of the split, jump, compensate and algorithm strategies for solving equations. Well done students!

News from P&C
Dear Families and Caregivers,
We started Term 3 with full speed and the Spring Fair is fast approaching. I hope all of you are well and getting excited about the activities in our school.
First of all, I would like to convey my apologies for my late message. I am sure all of us are quite busy with life, family, children, job, and all other commitments in our lives.
It was my first time joining and participating in an INTERNATIONAL BREAKFAST this year. What an amazing activity, it was!!! I absolutely loved it. After the pandemic, this was the first big event in our school. Of course, like all of you, I loved the variety of food, the decorations, the customs, the crowd, the energy, and loved all the smiling faces behind the tables serving food for our community. It was a lovely and uplifting atmosphere.
Secondly, I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Kylie Sommerfeld (EAL/D Coordinator) for organizing this fantastic event. That was a major project to deal with. Congratulations Kylie, great job!
Thirdly, of course, none of this celebration would have been happened if our families hadn’t participated. They put their hands up, each country organized its menu and preparations, cooked, baked, and served. Our families did the biggest part of the job. I would like to say THANK YOU to each and every one of you from bottom of my heart.
Please come and join us, let’s work together for Ironside State School. More people, more ideas, more networks, and stronger ties with the community. All of us working as volunteers at the school, together we can make bigger and better activities.
Many thanks again,
See you at another amazing activity.
