News from Mr Johnson

Dear Parents,

Ironside Remembers Queen Elizabeth II

During the royal visit to Brisbane in 1954 Ironside students lined Hawken Drive to see and pay respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The photos below are captured in an Ironside School Calendar produced to celebrate the schools 115th Year in 1985.

We acknowledge and respect our former monarch’s seventy plus years of service to the Commonwealth.

Congratulations to Kiyoaki T (6B)

Earlier this month the 48th Australian Karate Federation National Championships were held in Rockhampton.

Kiyoaki won first place (Gold Medal) in Kumite under 40kg, 10-11years (male) competition. Congratulations on a fine achievement.

Book Week Parade

Thanks to all members of our community who played an active part in making our Book Week parade a highlight of the week. Well done Ms Pinkerton, Ms Roche and Ms Wightwick for a terrific morning.

Change to Before School Procedures - Term 4

During next term we will be trialling a change to our before school procedures.

Curently the expectation is that students go to their undercover area where they are supervised from 8:30am until our first bell at 8:55am.

Next term we are trialling opening certain areas for certain year levels to facilitate before school play.

Students will be supervised by our ESO's (Education Support Officers - Teacher Aides) staff between 8:30am and 8:55am within the following areas:

Prep Students:

Area - Prep Precinct including the Prep playground. There will be 3 ESOs on duty that will supervise students as they play and to manage the students taking their bags to their bag racks.

Yr 1 - 3:

Areas - Under G Block and the Grassy Patch. All students will need to place their bags under G Block and will then have the option of playing on the Grassy Patch and Playground or waiting quietly under G Block. There will be 2 ESOs supervising the Grassy Patch and one under G Block.

Yr 4 - 6:

Areas - Under Library Basement and the Oval. All students will need to place their bags under the Library Basement and will then have the option of playing on the Oval or waiting quietly under the Library Basement. There will be 2 ESOs supervising the Oval and one under the Library Basement.

With this change what parents WON'T SEE are the current ESO staff at our Stop Drop and Go areas assisting children from cars. This is a COVID procedure legacy.

We have heard the strong preference from our community to see our children actively play before school. This requires our adult resources to be deployed inside, rather than outside our school gate.

As we work through Term 4, we will be consulting and reviewing this change to our procedures for consideration into 2023.

All the best for the school holidays.

School resumes for students on Tuesday 4th October 2022.

Damian Johnson, Principal.

Merit Awards - Year Prep - Year 2 (Term 3 Week 9)

News from Mr Murdoch

Dear parents and caregivers,

Bridge Builders – Skill of the week (Week 8): Share and Take Turns

Not sharing or not taking turns is often one of the biggest causes of conflict in a home. Helping children to recognise that when they choose this skill there are three benefits for them including:

  1. They might share with you.
  2. You become better friends.
  3. You feel good.

You can build your child’s sharing skills by watching for and praising good turn-taking, encouraging fairness and explaining about sharing. Help your child to practise this skill through simple activities that involve sharing and taking turns like kicking soccer goals or shooting basketball hoops.

When your child does try to share, be specific with praising what they shared and add ‘You must feel so proud of yourself to be so generous. Well done.’

Bridge Builders - Skill of the week (Week 9): Talk and Listen

Positive communication skills are essential for good relationships. Listening is a learned skill, and through focused and directed efforts, parents can teach their children and themselves better listening and speaking habits. Be a good role model by hearing things in their words and making them feel important while they are talking to you. Since they sense when you’re not listening, they’re much more apt to listen to you when you listen to them.

Bridge Builders - Skill of the week (Week 10): Be Kind

Teaching children to be kind to someone who they have been in conflict with seems like an oxymoron.  Often, a child’s natural instinct when they have been hurt is to hurt back.

Kindness in conflict is unexpected and it can be the opposite to what someone expects.  This can mean that they struggle to continue to be mean.   Learning to be kind when we are hurt starts with how we think about the other person.  It can require empathy and encourages children to be brave enough to be the hero in a problem.

Acts of kindness release hormones that make us feel calmer, healthier and happier.  They can also be contagious.

Around the classrooms – Prep:

Week 7:

What a busy two weeks the prep children have had with Science and Book Weeks!

During Science week we discussed the topic of ‘Glass’ and explored and participated in different experiments. We learnt about refraction, musical glasses, walking water and using binoculars. We made stained glass windows and recorded our reflections of what we had seen.

Excitement was everywhere on Wednesday as we checked out each other’s Book Week costumes, participated in the parade and cheered on our school.

Week 9:

In Prep we have been enjoying ‘Buddy Classes’ with Grade Four. Together we watched the ‘Bridge Builders Early Years’ online video. We learnt more about talking and listening to others. We were reminded about ‘standing brave’, staying calm and telling others about how we are feeling. Using little toy people, we practised the strategies with our ‘buddies’. We worked with our ‘buddies’ to make stick puppets of ourselves to use when practising Bridge Builder strategies with our buddy class.

Around the classrooms – Year 1:

Week 7:

As part of our Science unit this semester, Year One travelled by bus to the Nudgee Beach Environmental Centre. This excursion was an opportunity for students to learn about habitats, features of places and ways we can care for our environment.

First, we walked along a mangrove boardwalk. Students used their observation skills to carefully look for living things. Finding the mangrove mouse was a challenge. After lunch, we worked in teams at Nudgee Beach to look for living things and we created our very own Brisbane River. Lastly, we met some interesting sea creatures, wrote about natural, managed and built features of our travels and met a very friendly blue tongue lizard.

A huge thanks to Mrs Chiffey (1A) and the rest of the Year One team for organising.

It was such a fantastic excursion!

Around the classrooms – Year 2:

Week 7: In Grade 2, the children have been learning to make their narrative writing more interesting, by using similes and metaphors. These can evoke stronger images and create imagination in the reader’s mind. It has been fun discovering metaphors and the children are recognising the use of metaphors in everyday language. Grade 2 certainly are stars!

Week 9: This term the Year Two students have been exploring narrative writing. We have been capturing our readers with our amazing sizzling starts, banning the boring, tightening the tension, using dynamic dialogue and then making our readers laugh with an exciting ending!

It has been a wonderful nine weeks of going on magical adventures, facing intergalactic battles, causing time paradoxes in which we were almost stuck and discovering lost worlds. We also need to give a mention to the very helpful Paul Jennings whose stories helped us immensely along our journey of becoming short story experts. It was a tough journey that we thought at times we would never see the end of however with perseverance and resilience we have made it through to the other side and are most definitely ready for a narrative break……until next year.

Kind regards,

Scott Murdoch

News from year 3 and 4

As another busy term draws to a close, I’d like to thank the whole Ironside community for your continued support. With a camp to Tangalooma and plenty of excursions and incursions, it has been a big term for students in Year 3 and 4. It’s wonderful to be able to offer these experiences again and to see the enjoyment it brings our students. As this is the final newsletter for this term, I’d like to wish you all a wonderful break with your family.

Year 4 Camp

Well, we’ve returned from camp and what an amazing time we had. The weather was (mostly) beautiful and the dolphins were friendly. I’d like to acknowledge the teachers that came on camp and supported our students to ensure the had an amazing time. Keep an eye out on Facebook for more photos.

Spanish

Next term in week 2, students in Year 5 and 6 who are enrolled in Spanish will have the opportunity to enjoy an incredible Latin dance class from one of the best Cuban dancers, currently living in Brisbane.

Yasim Coronado, a graduate of the renowned National School of Art in Havana (Cuba), has travelled the world performing in some of the biggest theatres and dance companies. Yasim has over 15 years of professional dance and choreographic experience and has prepared an amazing lesson especially designed for our students.

Students will first ask some questions in Spanish about Yasim's life and professional experience. Then the choreography will come and finally, Yasim will dance for us to the sound of the song "Somos Uno" (We are one) which we have been preparing in class and will sing for the occasion.

At the end of the lesson, we will have had a wonderful experience and created an inspiring choreography.

BOOK WEEK FUN!

It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces at this morning’s Book Week Parade.  Here are a few happy snaps of some fantastic characters inspired by the love of reading.

Aniketh from 5D was invited to QASMT to be a part of National Science week celebrations and give a TED talk on "What the future of Science is" . As a young Einstein member at QASMT, he also got an opportunity to display his project that he has been working on for 2 months. He was very proud and happy to share his talk and the functional vending machine display. Well done Aniketh!!

MUSIC FEST DATES

We have just received the Music Fest dates for next term.  Your individual teachers will send much more information soon however now you can see your dates and plan forward.

SING Fest

On September 1st our Year 5 and 6 choral students attended SingFest at the Old Museum Building. This year’s SingFest was long awaited, after a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19 and it did not disappoint. Our Ironside choristers were joined by four other schools from across Brisbane for a full day of singing together, culminating in a showcase concert in the afternoon. It was wonderful to not only be able to provide our students with an experience such as this after two years, but to see how engaged they were and their love for singing shining through all day. Two of our choir captains, Cikal and Savannah, have also written about their experience at SingFest.

Singfest

By Cikal Auladi

SingFest was an amazing journey that expanded many of our choral experiences. It taught us teamwork, communication, and gave us new skills and techniques to use in our future choral workshops. During this event, conductor Jenny Moon and accompanist Justine Favell taught us many fun songs and games to entertain us. Some include ‘Mango, Kiwi, Banana’, ‘Chocolate, Cookie’, and ‘Do this, Do That’.

Schools from across the Metropolitan Region came together in “The Old Museum Building” in Bowen Hills to sing choral repertoire that they had learned in school. After many breaks and sessions of keen singing, the students came together as a larger choir to sing their repertoire that they had perfected and practised during the singing sessions. These songs include: ‘Icarus’, ‘Baltic’ (with a special accompaniment played on the violin by Belle Voci member Coco Li and Choir teacher Mrs Keomahavong), ‘Gravity’ and ‘Do I hear you Gossiping?’. Most of these songs had fun movements to match, that were specially choreographed by conductor Jenny Moon.

After a fun and long day of singing and performing, the students were happily picked up by their own parents or carpooled with a choir friend. This amazing, interesting experience will always be shared and discussed with friends and family!

SingFest

By Savannah Chaudhry

SingFest was an extraordinary experience. It consisted of curiosity, hope and friendship. It let us embrace our individuality while still coming together as one group. We met some wonderful people letting us get out of our comfort zone and build our confidence. Our conductors were hilarious, shaping young minds to have a positive outlook on singing. They taught us to have fun in choir and think of it as an opportunity more than just a lesson. Were the lyrics ‘chasing clouds, reaching stars’ just a coincidence? I think not. May we continue this lovely tradition for years to come, as SingFest was a sacred place to make memories and be bold. Truly unforgettable!

News from Chappy Thu

Dear Families,

And just like that, we find ourselves at the end of another term…and what a term it’s been! Jam packed with events such as the School Disco, Book Week, Science Week, Father’s Day Breakfast & Spring Fair as well as ‘first ever’ camps for our year 6s & year 4s, not to mention the plethora of musical competitions & events, where our students received the highest achievements & commendations. Despite the whirlwind, it has been such a joy to see the community returning to a sense of normalcy after a few very difficult years of disruptions & unexpectedness. This new equilibrium we are moving to is only possible through the support, willingness, thoughtfulness & dedication of each & every one of you. From staff to families to students…each of you bring something special & much needed to our school & I thank everyone for making this community what it is today. You are all AMAZING!

A Word of Thanks

Our Ironside Father’s Day Breakfast was in Week 7 & with over 880 tickets sold, I would say it was an outstanding success! Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to the wonderful morning, from those who attended to those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes for weeks leading up to the event.

Special mention to David Moore, our Chaplaincy Committee president, who really went above & beyond to ensure the success of this event. He liased with & coordinated volunteers, organised all the food, printed out tickets & posters, organised the entertainment & countless other things I’m probably not even aware of! Thank you also to the entire Chaplaincy Committee for all the early morning meetings, for all your wonderful ideas, for your support & for all your hard work on the morning. Thank you to the entire P&C, especially Lyn for setting QKR! up for us & being so instrumental in the success of our ticket sales & Rob for securing our third BBQ from ISHS & Olivia & her tuckshop team for all the fruit. Thank you to Tara W for her unwavering moral & emotional support as well as staying back one afternoon to help me get the last lot of tickets out. Thank you to each of our 50 volunteers, some of whom were already at the school before the sun was even up. Thank you to Councillor James Mackay for his thoughtful speech about fatherhood & the significance of Bluey on our society today. Thank you to Adele T, Victoria K & Lisa A & all their students for their wonderful song selections. Thank you to the whole Admin team for their steadfast support, especially Mr Jonhson for MCing the morning & finding the elusive roll up door key & Mr Davey for attending each meeting in the lead up to the event & for his innovative & practical solutions to challenges that surfaced. Thank you to all our sponsors, Lone Pine Sanctuary, TimeZone Indooroopilly, 17 Rocks Chocolate, BCF & Reading Cinemas for their generous donations. Lastly, in case you missed the photos on Facebook, here are a few from the day:

Chappy Activities have wrapped up for the term, with a special Chappy Squad Party this week to thank our first ever Chappy Squad for all their dedication & hard work. Being the first is not always the easiest, but the Squad should certainly be very proud of what they have achieved this term! From organising activities to helping students in need to saving caterpillars…you are all stars! Thank you!

A new Chappy Activity Schedule will be available during week 1 of Term 4. I look forward to seeing everyone again next term. Until then, I hope everyone has a wonderful school break!

    Upcoming School Events
