News from Mr Johnson

Dear Parents,

White Ribbon Day – Friday 18th November

In Week 7, on Friday 18 November Education Queensland is supporting White Ribbon Day to promote respectful relationships and zero tolerance for disrespect toward women and children. It is in line with:  Enough words. We need action.

The Ironside State School Health Safety and Wellbeing Committee is inviting staff to participate in and support this day by wearing white or a white ribbon.

What is the purpose of White Ribbon Day?

White Ribbon is the world's largest movement engaging men and boys to end men's violence against women and girls, promote gender equality and create new opportunities for men to build positive, healthy and respectful relationships.

What is the meaning of White Ribbon?

Men and boys wearing the White Ribbon declare that they will never commit, excuse, or remain silent about men's violence against women. White Ribbon is one of the world's largest male-led campaigns to end men's violence against women. It started in 1991 in Canada, and is now active in many countries across the globe.

October Stars of the Month

Congratulations to our Years 3-6 Stars of the Month for October. Thank-you for being the best possible role models of the Ironside Star!

Ironside P&C supports State and National level student representatives

A reminder to our families that the Ironside P&C provides financial support to families when their child makes representative school sport teams at the State and National level.

The Ironside SS P&C has acknowledged for a number of years, the financial commitment involved to send children to State and National carnivals.

If your child represents Metropolitan West at a State Championship, the P&C will support your child with $100 towards the cost of the Championship Levy.

If your child represents Queensland at a National Championship, the P&C will support your child with $250 towards the cost of the Championship Levy.

This is processed through me (School Principal) and taken to the next monthly P&C meeting for ratification.

All the best to our families for the fortnight ahead.

Stay safe and well.

Damian Johnson, Principal.

News from Mr Murdoch

Dear parents and caregivers,

Bridge Builders – Skill of the week (Weeks 5 & 6): REVISION

Bridge Builders® is a school-wide proactive program aligned to the Australian Curriculum (Personal and Social Capabilities), implemented sequentially from Prep–Year 6. Students are explicitly taught to apply conflict resolution strategies, communicate using a common language and build their confidence to solve interpersonal problems.

Bridge Builders® at Ironside State School is a whole school approach that promotes resilience and self-worth. It encourages students to respond appropriately and challenge conflict behaviours and to develop positive and safe relationships. It is embedded into the everyday life of the school.

To support families with younger children, Ironside State School provides access to the Bridge Builders Online Program.  This program is designed to help students with resolving everyday conflict and will be implemented during the course of the year with students accessing material both during class, and outside of class time.

Throughout the year, students have engaged in the Bridge Builders program to develop age-appropriate conflict resolution skills. Classroom teachers will continue to revise these skills and strategies for the remainder of the year.

At Ironside State School, we take an educative approach to incidents of conflict.

“We need to provide clarity for children in what choices are friendly and those that cause conflict. We must not assume that children understand the differences. It is vital to teach the language of friendly and conflict choices, so that these can be discussed as they arise.

With younger children, it is extremely important to help them understand by modelling appropriate language, tone and body language.”

Around the classrooms – Prep:

In Prep C we have been exploring how things move. We are making connections from our science unit last term about the properties of items and learning how these properties may affect the way an object moves. We’ve had fun investigating objects that roll, slide, bounce and spin and how force plays a part in movement. We made our own bouncy balls, explored chain reactions with dominos and experimented to see how the angle of a ramp can change how far a ball rolls. As scientists we know that what we predict may not always be correct, but making mistakes is a way to learn new things.

Around the classrooms – Year 1:

This term in science the Year 1 students have been exploring habitats! We begun this unit with an excursion to Nudgee beach environmental centre, here we explored the mangrove and beach habitats. In 1E we focussed on these habitats as well as the bush. We researched the animals that live in these habitats and how these habitats provide them with food and shelter. We have been exploring the affects of both natural and man-made impacts on these habitats, and how the animals/habitats cope. Finally, we are investigating how humans can help long-term and when there is a natural disaster. We have collated all our research and learning onto our visible learning space.

Around the classrooms – Year 2:

Year Two students have been learning about forces in Science this term. They have had fun experimenting with toy cars on different surfaces. Students discovered that the cars had more friction and slowed down on surfaces like concrete and carpet. They predicted and found the cars went quicker and further due to less friction on smoother surfaces such as their desks.

The children have enjoyed doing lots of measuring during their maths lessons. Last week they measured the capacity of different containers using rainbow rice, coloured water, chickpeas and macaroni. They loved the hands-on experience of measuring with different units!

Kind regards,

Scott Murdoch

Deputy Principal P-2

News from Mr Davey

Year 3

Koala detection Dogs

In year 3, our HASS unit this term explores how humans are contributing to the decline in population of endangered species. As part of this unit, students are researching those in the community who are acting to protect endangered animals – Wildlife Warriors.

Ironside students were lucky to have some real-life Wildlife Warriors visit last week! OWAD Environment is a specialist environmental consultancy with two professional koala detection dogs – Taz and Missy. Olivia, Kristy and Shaggy (their official "PR Officer") answered our questions about Koalas, what OWAD Environment does to protect them and what Ironside students can also do.

Year 4

Design Technologies

This semester in Technologies lessons students are:

  • explaining how products, services and environments are designed to best meet needs of communities and their environments.
  • describing contributions of people in design and technologies occupations.
  • planning and sequencing major steps in design and production.
  • identifying appropriate technologies and techniques and demonstrate safe work practices when producing designed solutions.
  • explaining needs or opportunities and evaluate ideas and designed solutions against identified criteria for success, including environmental sustainability considerations.

Students are now at the point of building their design solution and they’re looking great!

Buddhism RI in 2023

As 2022 starts to wrap up, our planning moves towards 2023. Unfortunately, we were unable to offer Buddhism as part of our RI program in 2022 due to limited volunteers, but we are hopeful of re-introducing it into our 2023 RI program. Before this happens, we do require an Expression of Interest to ensure we have adequate numbers. Please find some information below about the program and email Admin@ironsidess.eq.edu.au if you would like your child to participate in Buddhism lessons through the RI program in 2023. Please note Buddhism lessons are only available for students in Years 3-6.

A Little bit about the Buddhism RI Program

The intention of sharing the wisdom of the Buddha with the children is for them to be aware that there are consequences of what they think, say, and do. This helps them to develop life-skills that will benefit their own lives and therefore also the wider community and society.  Our aim is for the children to lead happy and healthy lives. Gentle meditation skills are integrated into the pattern of the lessons, and the children therefore learn how to better manage the inevitable ups and downs of life.

There is no requirement for the student to come from a Buddhist family, all are welcome.

Kind regards,

Peter Davey

Deputy Principal 3-4

YEAR SIX SUSTAINABILITY SHOWCASE

GRADUATION CELEBRATIONS

Families are advised that Year 6 graduation celebrations will take place at school on the evening of Tuesday 6 December.  Students receive their Year Books on the following day for signing.  There is a Year 6 pool party and games day scheduled for Thursday 8 December, during school hours.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP – CURRENT YEAR FIVE STUDENTS

As our Year 5 students approach their final term, it is time to begin focussing on the supported leadership journey for our 2023 Year 6 cohort.

Below is a summary of the roles and responsibilities for student leaders at Ironside.

A Year 5 student nominating for election into school leadership positions must have consistently demonstrated leadership qualities throughout 2022. At Ironside State School, student leadership positions are held in high regard.  The process for student leader selection is therefore rigorous and the criteria is specific in nature.  The student leadership election process has been structured to provide a clear and supportive procedure which is outlined in the following information.

To be considered for a leadership position at Ironside students must have demonstrated consistent modelling of the Ironside Way through exhibiting the STAR values of being Safe and Kind, Treasuring Diversity, Acting with Integrity & being Respectful. They must also have demonstrated competent public speaking skills in both formal and informal contexts.  Duties of the Captains and Vice Captains include; holding executive positions in the Student Council; welcoming and hosting school guests; organising and running school assemblies; and representing Ironside at community events.

The following timelines will guide the nomination, application, interview and election processes:

As representatives of Ironside State School, all of these leadership roles involve and require mentoring, guidance and the maintenance of very high standards of conduct to which other students can aspire to.  We trust that parents will support their children’s involvement in the nomination and election process in accordance with the guidelines set by the school’s expectations.  We look forward to engaging in the process with the students and working with the successful applicants.

Kind regards,

Jennifer Bairstow

Deputy Principal 5-6

Ironside Futsal team - 12 Boys

Hello, our names are Gavynjay and Ben. We are writing on behalf of the Ironside age 12 Boys futsal team that we have been representing for three years (2020-2022). This year we have had many great successes, to read about our journey since the very beginning click the link below.

But here's a snapshot of what happened in 2022......

This year was the most awkward year when it came to who was in our team and who wasn’t. At the beginning of this year there were trials for the 12-year boys futsal team. Once again there were many students at the basketball court for a trial but only 8 people made the team. This year Ben, Theo and I made the team along with Yuito, Aki, Will, Lucas and Evan. This was a very special team as Ben, Theo, and I would be representing Ironside futsal for the third year and this year would be Yuito’s second. Evan had recently come to the school from Canada so this would be his first year along with Aki, Will, and Lucas. Our team was set for the round robin tournament at a familiar venue, Nissan Arena. Our team had many new faces, characters, and personalities so it was time to begin training. Training was on every Monday afternoon at the Basketball court. This team didn’t have the technical ability that our team had a year ago, but we sure had something better. This year’s team had the confidence and the belief that we could win any tournament that we were faced with.

A week before the round robin day we had found out that Yuito wasn’t going to be with us for the tournament as he was going back to Japan for a holiday. We were going into this tournament with 7 eager boys ready to win. We won our first 4 games but lost our final game 4-0 against the Kings Christian College. After an awesome day we had qualified for the Brisbane Metro final’s day, a tournament that we had won 2 years straight before this and we were looking to make it a third. We again didn’t have Yuito as he had now permanently gone back to Japan and we also found out that this would be Evan’s final tournament with us as he was also going back to his home country, Canada. This tournament was again at Nissan arena. In the round of 16 which was our first game, we went 1-0 down but, in the end, we came back winning 6-1 with Ben scoring 5 of the goals but again, this was a team effort. We were through to the quarter finals where we would play a familiar opponent, Kings Christian College. This time we proved too strong and came out on top with a solid 5-3 victory. This result showed the amount of hard work and desire we put into our training sessions which definitely paid off. We were faced with West End state school in the semi-final but unfortunately, we lost 4-2. We took out many positives from this tournament as we had now qualified for the champions of champions futsal titles. We kept training hard for the tournament, but we had now lost 3 of our players for this upcoming tournament. Yuito and Evan who had gone back to their home countries, and Aki who had a Karate tournament at the same time of our upcoming tournament. We needed replacements desperately. Max and Jack had now joined our team.

In the middle of grade 6 camp at camp Warrawee, was our tournament. On Thursday morning Mr Perrier came to our cabins and woke us up. We got changed, brushed our teeth, and ate breakfast before Ben’s mum came to pick us up. We went through the group stage winning 4/4 games which put us at the top of our group. We faced Robina state high school in the Quarter final. We would again have to make a comeback as we were 3 goals down as the score was 3-0. We got 3 quick goals before the halftime break. In the second half we won against all odds with the final score being 7-4. This was our ticket to the Australasian futsal titles. We were faced against Toowoomba Grammar school in the semi-final where we just beat them 1-0. We were in the final against Peregian Beach College. We had a disastrous first half being down 7-0 but we reduced the deficit as the final score was 9-4. We received our first piece of silverware of 2022, and we were back on our way to camp with Gav’s and Max’s mothers dropping us there, just in time for dinner. We ended on a high note, but we continued to train. In the Australasian tournament there were 2 New South Wales team coming and the rest were the best futsal schools in Queensland. We won our first game comfortably against Forster State school and drew our second game 4-4 on the first day against Kawana Waters state College. On the second day we were up against Peregian Beach College from the get-go. We held on until the final 3 minutes when they unfortunately scored 2 goals to make it 2-0. This was a great result as we previously lost to them 9-4. In the afternoon we were playing Bishop Druitt College, a football excellence school that travelled from NSW. If we lost this game, our chances would be very slim to make the semi-finals. We found ourselves 3-0 down but Aki scored a quick goal before the half time break. We came back winning the game 6-4. This result put us in the Australasian semi-finals. The game next morning was a game determining which team we would play in the semi-finals. We were playing Assisi Catholic College. We won the game 6-1 but their team’s previous scores didn’t add up with the game we just played. All of their stronger players were sitting on the bench for the majority of the game. We found ourselves playing Assisi Catholic College again as we came 2nd in the group, and they came 3rd. We once again went into the game overconfident however we got the first goal of the game. After the goal we didn’t stick to our game plan and let the opposition play through us as there were many holes. We ended losing the game 5-1. We were all miserable but on the bright side, we had a very dramatic year however we finished our journey being either the 3rd or 4th best futsal team in Australia. This was an excellent finish to our long journey this year especially to the boys in our team who got their first opportunity to represent Ironside State school at the big stage and some even getting their first piece of silverware that they earned from a competitive tournament. Everyone in this team should be extremely proud of themselves as we have come so far.

Over the years Ben, Theo and I have thoroughly enjoyed our 3-year futsal journey with Ironside State school. We would like to thank Mrs English, Mr Cortes, team members and parents of the players for sticking by us and cheering for us through our lows and highs on this amazing journey, one that we will cherish forever. Thank you once again for the Fabulous memories.

Ironside Futsal team - 10 Boys

Hello To Ironside State School Community,

This Friday and through the weekend the Ironside futsal teams (U10 and U12) went to the Australasian Champion of Champions Tournament organized by Australian Futsal Association (AFA).

The U10s team played 6 games through these 3 days. The teams that played there were the best from QLD and NSW. In the U10s group they played with U11 and U10 from other public and private schools.

To get to this stage the Ironside team previously won the Brisbane Metro School Title and then progressed to semi-final in Regional Champion of Champions. That was enough to qualify.

This was a great achievement for our Futsal Team (U10) in 2022.

Here are the names of the players:

  • Eddie
  • Mason
  • Hugo
  • Marcus
  • Aniketh
  • Patrick
  • Sri
  • Thoma

We want to thank Ms. English and Mr. Cortes for making this possible for us!

It was an exciting experience.

Aniketh and Thoma

News from Chappy Thu

Dear Families,

In a blink of an eye, another two weeks have passed & we’re just that tiny bit closer to the end of 2022. Wow! Chappy Activities have resumed & are in full swing again with hundreds of students attending across the sessions each week. A BIG thank you to Chappy Squad teams A & B for all your help over the past 2 weeks. Your dedication, innovation & kindness are truly appreciated! During the activities, we foster confidence building crafts & games, such as the fun Halloween inspired affirmation pumpkin shown below where students think about what they are grateful for & what their strengths are. We also offer opportunities for students to encourage others through crafts such as cards & origami tulips.

Gingerbread Evening

Gingerbread Evening tickets for houses & food have now closed & although I have received many more requests, our supplier (the Gingerbread Folk) is unable to modify our order at this stage. As a compromise, we will be providing other kits on the night for purchase for those who missed out. These kits will not be houses, but a variety of cookies & trees that can also be decorated. Lolly bags will also be sold for those who discover they didn’t bring enough or would like to add more variety to the decorations they have brought.

Please note that you DO NOT need tickets to simply attend the Christmas Market or the Chappy Squad Stall. The tickets are just for the house decorating section of the night.

If you would like to be involved, here are the ways you can help:

  • Volunteer to help on the night (please email Chappy Thu if interested (tklet0@eq.edu.au))
  • Donate good quality, new items for the Make & Bake Stall (drop off at the office any time until Friday, 25thNovember)
  • Donate already wrapped, ready to sell baked goods for the Make & Bake Stall (drop off in Staff Lounge on Thursday, 1stDecember during the day or bring to the Hall from 5pm onwards)
  • Supply festive decorations for the night such as tablecloths, fairy lights, tinsel & so forth (these will all be returned to you afterwards)

If you are a parent of a Chappy Squad member, the following letter was sent home with your student last week. Please return the permission slip to me ASAP & AT LATEST Friday, 18th November. A BIG thank you to those who have already returned the slip.

We look forward to seeing you at the Gingerbread Evening!
