SWIMMING NEWS

Recently some of our Ironside Swim Club / GPSS swimmers competed at the 2023 Vorgee Brisbane Sprint Championships, held at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre. Qualifying times must have been achieved to enter this meet.

All our swimmers did exceptionally well and Louie C (6C) swam a personal best time and achieved the silver medal for the male 10yo 50m backstroke event. This is an impressive achievement - congratulations, Louie!

Well done also to Rosie Z, Sam W, Sophie W, Jaylan W, Edie C and Rosie W who all swam brilliantly and walked away with plenty of PBs and happy smiles. Thank you to Coach Patric for supporting our swimmers on the day.

LIBRARY LIFE MEMBERS

Congratulations to the first Library Life Members for 2023. It was a pleasure to present you with your badges on Tuesday. Thank-you to Rafeef H, Ananya K, Rosie Z, Vassiliki O’C, Abdullah S, Bart H, Emily D and Daniel C for your ongoing service.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

As we enter another election cycle of the Ironside School Council, I’d like to acknowledge the following people for their valued leadership, strategic contributions and service to the school.

Mr Rob Wootton continues his term as School Council Chair. During my principalship I have been strongly supported by all Council Chairpersons - Mr Richard Jolly, Mrs Laurel Zaicek, Mr Andrew Hoyling and Mrs Sarah Holland and Rob Wootton.

Mr Prasad Chunduri and Mrs Meg Breen complete their two-year term on the School Council. Mrs Nilufer Krishnamoorthy has resigned from her position. I’m very grateful for the support, contribution, and service that Prasad, Meg and Lilly have given during their time on School Council.

Mr Brett Perrier and Mr Paul Logan complete their term on the School Council as elected staff members. Sincere thanks for your service, representing the Ironside staff voice at the most strategic level.

A reminder that the Notice of Elections and a Nomination Form have been sent to the community.

Stay safe and well. Warm regards.

Damian Johnson, Principal.

News from Mr Weston-Murdoch

Dear parents and caregivers,

Welcome back!  Congratulations to our Prep – Year Two students who have settled back into school routines nicely.

As a school, we would like to take a moment to extend a warm welcome to those that are joining the Ironside community this year – particularly our newest of students, the Preps.

For some, in these early weeks of school, it can take a little longer getting to know new teachers, classmates and routines.

The start of a new school year involves a big change for your child. It is normal for children to have strong feelings as they start to think about these changes, such as excitement about the prospect of going to school as well as nervousness about what lies ahead.

Prep children may also be feeling sad or angry about leaving early childhood education and care. This includes letting go of relationships formed with educators and other children, as well as a change to their familiar routines. Some common feelings children have during transition to school can include:

  • excitement
  • sadness
  • anger
  • anticipation
  • fear or anxiety

Understanding and helping your child to handle the feelings associated with starting or returning to school will help to reduce their stress and can provide them with positive coping strategies.

Arrivals and Departures 2022 – Prep, Years 1 & 2

Students may arrive at school from 8:30am onwards and will be supervised by school staff.  Students are to wait in their dedicated waiting areas or utilise the appropriate supervised play space.

PREP Arrivals:

Using the entrances at either Swann Rd or Hawken Drive, parents and Prep students may make their way to the Prep Precinct from 8:30am.  Parents, we ask that you practice using our “Hug and Go” stations, and let our Preppies independently make their way to the classroom.

Students are to place their bag on the bag rack and organise their belongings as per the classroom routines. Teachers and Educational Support Officers will be there to assist children, particularly in the first weeks of school.

Each classroom teacher will have their own routine and expectations before the school day starts i.e. putting bag on rack, placing water bottles and ‘crunch’ containers in the appropriate spot.  Your classroom teacher will practise these with the students.

Your part in this process is to allow your child to manage these little routines on their own and to ensure conversations are had with your child about what they need to do.  These conversations and preparation are vital to ensure your child’s readiness for routine changes later in the year.

If your child is experiencing difficulty or uncertainty, remember we are here to help and support.

* The Prep playground is not to be accessed during this time.

* It is important for parent to leave this work to the students and teachers. Should your child seek your assistance, direct them to listen and follow the teacher's instructions.

School starts promptly at 9:00am. A bell will ring (this is a standard school bell), signalling to students that they should be ready to enter the classroom and start their day. Upon hearing this bell, it is expected that parents promptly vacate the Prep Precinct and school grounds.

PREP Departures:

At the end of the school day, Prep students will be waiting in the Grassy Patch for parents, known adults or siblings to collect them.

Students will be in class lines. Signs and markers will help to locate and collect your child.

Parents, known adults or siblings are to speak to the supervising adult and state who they are collecting.

* This is a matter of student safety and needs to be conducted in an orderly manner. Patience during this process will be greatly appreciated.

Things to note (Prep):

  • If your child attends before or after school care - the OSHC educators will ensure that students they arrive and depart class safely.
  • For students that access the care provided by Playhouse - the educators will ensure the safe arrival and departure as per their advice.
  • If your child attends a program provided by an external provider after school (dance, tennis, etc.), the duty of care remains with the parents accessing this service.
  • Students are to be collected promptly by 3:00pm at the end of the school day.

In the event of inclement weather, Prep students should have a raincoat in their school bag. Umbrellas are a hazard to other Prep students. Students with umbrellas will be asked to close them due to safety concerns.

Arrivals and Departures: STOP, DROP and GO zones

Please be mindful of our STOP, DROP and GO zones which are located on Hawken Drive and Central Avenue. These zones are designed to keep traffic moving during peak times in the mornings and afternoons.

These zones are clearly signed and parents are to remain in their car during arrivals and departures.

Parking in the STOP, DROP and GO zones is a hazard and safety issue to students and other members of the community.

Year 1 Parents:

One of the systems we use at school to keep students safe is the wearing of a yellow bucket hat in Prep.  This helps to keep Prep students easily identifiable in the playground to make sure they are in the right place.

There are some Year 1 students who are still using this yellow bucket hat which is causing some confusion in the playground.

We kindly request that you purchase the appropriate blue hat used by our Years 1 – 6 students at your earliest convenience.

These hats are readily available for purchase at the uniform shop or via the Qkr app.

Thanks in advance for your co-operation with this matter.

New uniforms can be ordered online via the online app Qkr! http://qkr.mastercard.com/.

Please note the Uniform Shop cannot accept cash.  Payment can be made by EFTPOS in store and via use of the Qkr! app (online).

Bridge Builders:

Bridge Builders® is a school-wide proactive program aligned to the Australian Curriculum (Personal and Social Capabilities), implemented sequentially from Prep–Year 6. Students are explicitly taught to apply conflict resolution strategies, communicate using a common language and build their confidence to solve interpersonal problems.

Bridge Builders® at Ironside State School is a whole school approach that promotes resilience and self-worth. It encourages students to respond appropriately and challenge conflict behaviours and to develop positive and safe relationships. It is embedded into the everyday life of the school.

Bridge Builders - Skill of the week: Behaviour is a choice

Taking responsibility for the choices we make is a sign of maturity. The primary school years are an ideal time to introduce both an understanding of possible choices and the skills needed to show that children have control over behaviours. Simply put, children can either choose to be friendly or they can choose to cause a conflict.

We need to provide clarity for children in what choices are friendly and those that cause conflict. We must not assume that children understand the differences. It is vital to teach the language of friendly and conflict choices, so that these can be discussed as they arise.

With younger children, it is extremely important to help them understand by modelling appropriate language, tone and body language.

“Empowered for Life”; Jocelyne Chirnside

In relation to incidents of conflict at Ironside State School, we take a positive, solutions-focused approach and stay low on the ladder of inference.  When incidents are discussed at home, please mindful of assumptions being made or getting caught up in emotions, particularly around the perspectives of younger children.

The best thing parents can do when conflict is reported at home is to apply an adult lens and filter the information: Step back, listen, investigate if necessary or see this as an opportunity for personal growth.

How we respond as adults and manage emotions in this space plays a critical role in developing and building a child’s resilience.

There are systems, structures and processes in place to support individuals and the general population, both academically and socially.  Your classroom teacher should always be your first point of contact.

Prep, Year 1 & Year 2 Parents: Bridge Builders Online

To support families with younger children, Ironside State School provides access to the Bridge Builders Online Program.  This program is designed to help students with resolving everyday conflict and will be implemented during the course of the year with students accessing material both during class, and outside of class time.

In the coming weeks, teachers will be sending unique licence keys and invitations to access this program at home.

Around the classrooms – Year 1:

In Prep this week we have be learning the names and sounds of letters. One of our favourite things is making art work to match our letters. Check out Prep C’s “Interesting Insects” to go with the letter “I”.

Around the classrooms – Year 1:

A huge welcome back to all returning families and a warm welcome to new families in Year One this year.

We have been blown away by our Year One students in the first few weeks. Adjusting back to school life can take some time for our little ones and they are settling and responding well to their new routines. It has been wonderful to see students so excited to be with their peers again and we are encouraging students to build new friendships already.

In our classrooms, we have been working together to make our classroom promises. You will see our STAR posters around the classrooms and school. Our promises reflect our school values at Ironside State School. We encourage each child in Year One to strive to be a STAR at our school.

Please enjoy these photos of some of our students so far this term.

Around the classrooms – Year 2:

The start of the year has been a busy and exciting time in Year 2. Once unpacked and organised in the classroom, Year 2 students have been introduced to a few new routines. One of these new routines has been meeting Year 6 buddies. Every week Year 2 students will spend some time with their Year 6 buddy (2A with 6A, 2B with 6B etc) and get to know them in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. They will also be using this weekly meeting time to practise Bridge Builder skills and enjoy shared reading. This process of encouraging socialising across year levels has many benefits and we look forward to watching these relationships blossom!

News from Mr Davey

Dear families,

I’d like to officially welcome back all of our families to the 2023 school year. It has been wonderful to see all of our students back at school, eager and ready to learn. Students in Year 3 and 4 have hit the ground running and are already impressing their new teachers.

I would also like to formally welcome the new families joining the Ironside community this year.

Parent Information Sessions

Thank you to all those families that attended last night’s parent information sessions. I hope it was an informative session that gave you some insight into how your child’s classroom runs. I’d also like to acknowledge the dedicated teachers at Ironside for giving up their own time to provide these sessions.

Inquiry Learning in Years 3 and 4

This semester, our Year 3 and 4 students are continuing to develop their skills as inquiry learners by answering ‘big questions’ in English and HASS.

Year 3 Big Questions:

How can we persuade our classmates?

Are we ‘one’ or are we many?

Year 4 Big question:

How do authors entice children to read?

How does the past shape the future?

I look forward to bringing you updates as students complete their cycle of inquiry.

Around the Classrooms – Year 3

Students in 3D have been working on their persuasive writing. Their task this week was to convince their teachers that 3D needs a pet parrot.

Students in 3E have been learning about symmetry in Maths. This led to some very symmetrical tigers.

Around the Classrooms – Year 4

4C have been inquiring into the difference between rules and laws. We thought about all the rules we’ve been learning in class to help with our self-management skills, wrote posters and pinned them up to help everyone remember!

The school Library is open before school on Monday to Friday 8:30 – 8:55am.  Students are expected to wait in their year-level waiting areas for the Library to open.

After school hours are 3:00 – 3:30pm on Monday and Thursday afternoons. Students are expected to exit the Library and wait in their designated pick-up areas before 3:30pm.

Students in Prep – Year 2 will require a library bag for borrowing.

Religious Instruction

Hinduism

As we start to piece together our Religious Instruction program for 2023, we are chasing some community feedback around the addition of Hindu RI classes to the program. Before this happens, we do require an Expression of Interest to ensure we have adequate numbers. if you would like your child to participate in Hinduism lessons through the RI program in 2023,  please submit this in writing to: pdave16@eq.edu.au AND adhil@eq.edu.au before Friday 17/2/23.

Religious Instruction will commence in Term 1 (Week 6) this year. This is an option available to all students in Years 1-6.

Faith groups who are offering RI at Ironside are:

  • Buddhist (Year 3-6)
  • Catholic
  • Combined Christian
  • Islam
  • Hindu (dependant on numbers)

Students will be enrolled into the RI group aligned with the information provided on the enrolment form at the time of enrolment.  Should you wish to change the RI group that your child attends, please submit this advice in writing to: pdave16@eq.edu.au AND adhil@eq.edu.au It is possible to change groups/cease attendance at any time.

Kind regards,

Peter Davey

Deputy Principal 3-4

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Firstly, official congratulations to our two School Captains for 2023:  Xiao Nan and Cikal, and our two Vice-Captains:  Neelan & Sophia.  I am sincerely looking forward to working with these students as they pave out their own leadership paths in 2023.

Students have also voted in House Captains.  Congratulations to the following leaders:

Cook:  Elliot & Vassiliki

Flinders:  Julian W & Longxin

Oxley:  Aniketh & Rosie Z

Sturt:  Lennox & Harriet

Our Bridge Builders (24 x Year 6 students) will be announced tomorrow.  We have been overwhelmed by interest in this program – receiving 70 applicants this year!  This is a credit to how the program is held in such high regard by our students and the increasing interest each year by year can be attributed to the Bridge Builder PACE Leadership training that all Year 5 students participate in during Term 4.

We now need to elect and select all other leadership positions to fill our Student Council, and beyond.  Below is a table summary of the positions, election and selection process, terms of service, roles and responsibilities.

Students who have not yet secured a leadership are invited to self-nominate for a position on the Student Council. Students are also asked to write a brief summary about why they believe they would make a good leader and member of the Student Council. Teachers will be spending class time to guide students through the process.  Students are invited to self-nominate and deliver a one-minute speech to their class for voting.

The Leadership Induction and badge presentation ceremony is set for assembly at 9.15am on Friday 3 March.  When all leadership positions have been filled, families will receive a formal invitation.  As with all of our assemblies, parents are always welcome.

YEAR FIVE PROVOCATION – DEMOCRACY

Thank you to the Year 5 parents who supported and engaged in the provocation linked to our HASS unit regarding Australian values and democracy. The positive feedback from parents was affirming and appreciated.

Please see below the message that I sent to all Year 5 students last week:

Dear Year 5 Students,

Last week, I visited each of your classrooms to discuss the new voting and election processes for Student Council.  The new systems we decided to put in place were as follows:

5A:  Votes to be visible to the whole class

5B:  Voting to occur during lunch times with no guarantee that there would be enough time to register a vote

5C:  Only boys could nominate and they needed to be at Ironside for longer than 2 years.

5D:  Only students who had been at Ironside since Prep could nominate.

5E:  Only and all students with older siblings who attended Ironside could be considered for leadership.

5F:  No voting.  Teacher decision and no correspondence entered into.

Since sharing this decision with you, I have been overwhelmed by conversations, posters letters and emails trying to convince and persuade me to reinstate the old system of voting.  (Please see photo below!!)

While each letter was unique in its own way, these were the key messages that came through in all of them.  This is what I have heard from you as a group:

  • Voting should be “anonymous” so as to “avoid peer pressure”
  • Some students were “disappointed, upset and might feel embarrassed or ashamed” if these systems went ahead
  •  Voting should be based in fairness
  •  You would like the opportunity to vote for leaders who are “passionate”, “inspiring”, “respectful” and “responsible”
  • You want all students to be treated “equally” and free from “discrimination” regardless of their class / age / family circumstance
  •  Students having a “choice” is very important to you
  •   Everyone should have an “equal” chance to be a leader
  •   Leaders should be voted in according to “skill, not luck”

Overall, I have heard the message that you believe the changes are “awfully unfair” and “not best for the school”.

Thank you for taking the time to let me know of your thoughts, feelings and opinions.  Your letters have helped me see this from a different point of view.  So, I have decided to return to the old voting system.

Only those who want to be elected will need to deliver a speech to the class – so the opportunity is based in freedom of choice.  This will be an anonymous vote – so the votes can be based in honesty.  Everyone has the equal chance to be elected – delivering a speech of the same length at the same time.  This will ensure that there is no discrimination.  The person with the most votes will be elected as the class Student Councillor – ensuring that it is a decision based in fairness.  All the classes will have the same rules, so that the voting system is fair and equal.

Early next week, your teachers will ask you to self-nominate for leadership positions (Student Councillor / Class Rep) if you wish.  You have already demonstrated outstanding leadership in the way you have communicated with me in the last week.  I am very much looking forward to working with you for the remainder of the year.

LIFE ED – SEXUAL HEALTH AND RELEATIONSHIPS EDUCATION

Sexual Health and Relationships Education for our Year 5 and 6 students through Life Education Queensland are now underway. The information here aims to help you understand the content of this session. The school recognises that you are the primary educator of your child on issues surrounding their sexuality, however we believe we can work together to help children stay safe by encouraging healthy attitudes. The “Talk About It” program by Life Education includes information on puberty incorporating physical growth and emotional changes, relationships and the concept of self.  It is designed to help students understand and cope with this important phase of development.

The program is designed to assist young people develop a positive attitude towards their own sexuality and provides them with information on how to look after themselves during this stage of their development.  The lessons being conducted will focus on the physical, social and emotional changes experienced during puberty and helping students understand and cope with this important phase of development. The program covers content from the Health strand of the Australian Curriculum and topics covered are include Puberty, Evolving Friendships, Discovering Identity & Human Reproduction.  The following link provides and outline of the “Talk About It” program, and details how the program is aligned to the curriculum standards.  https://lifeeducationqld.org.au/our-programs/talk-about-it/

We are fortunate to have Rachel Stevens, a former Ironside teacher, now working for Life Education conducting the sessions which have been tailored to the needs of our school and students.  Classroom teachers will always be present in the room during sessions as well.  Parents who wish to withdraw their children from these modules have been asked to contact their teachers directly, and alternative supervision arrangements have been made.

Year 5 students will partake in two modules entitled “Who am I?” and “Evolving Friendships”.  The cost for this will be $27.

Year 6 students will partake in three modules entitled “Discovering Identity”; “Surviving Puberty” and “The Journey of Human Reproduction”.  The cost for this will be $35

Thank you to the 80 parents who were able to join Rachel for the parent information session on Monday evening.  Please find attached additional resources to support your conversations at home.

STUDENT DIARIES

All students in Years 4 – 6 have been provided with a 2023 Ironside Student Diary.  Students are encouraged to use this as a tool to support the skills of organisation and time management.  Each teacher will require students to use these diaries in different ways.  Some like them to be sent home daily, others use them more as a support at school.

Have a lovely weekend!

Kind regards,

Jennifer Bairstow

Deputy Principal 5-6

Instrumental

Rehearsals are in beginning for all our intermediate and senior bands and orchestras. Junior Band and Junior Strings rehearsals do not start until Term 2.
Lessons are also beginning for all instrumental students from Year 2 to 6. To manage our lessons around the specialist timetable students may need to bring their instrument for their lesson on a separate day to their ensemble, so please check your timetable and lesson days really carefully.

Choral

Our Junior Choirs have commenced with lots of enthusiasm!

Being a member of the Year 1 & Year 2 Choir is a wonderful experience for the children to be part of a team, explore fun and challenging repertoire, and develop self-confidence.

Over the past couple of weeks, the children in Years 1 & 2 have been encouraged to come along to rehearsals to see what being part of their Year Level Choir is all about.

By now the children would have considered their committment to the group, and from next week those committed members will be put on the official attendance Choir Roll.

Parents of children in the Choir will received correspondence via email by next week, confirming their child's involvement and committment.

If you do not receive any correspondence by the end of Week 4, and you believe that your child is a Choir member, please contact Marianne Huxley mehux0@eq.edu.au.

Year 1 Choir

The Year 1 Choir's official title is Piccole Voci, meaning 'little voices'.

Year 1 Choir rehearses each Tuesday during first break time in Mrs Huxley's room.

Year 2 Choir

The Year 2 Choir's official title is Voci Dei Bambini, meaning 'children's voices'.

Year 2 Choir rehearse each Wednesday during first break time in Mrs Huxley's room.

This term, both Junior Choirs will be working toward Assembly performances later this term, and the Year 2 Choir is currently preparing ANZAC repertoire for our ANZAC Ceremony early Term 2.
