Dear parents and caregivers,
Bridge Builders - Skill of the week: Calming down body and mind
Being able to calm down when we are upset or stressed is something all ages can be challenged by.
Our emotions are affected by our hormones. There are hormones released, such as cortisol and adrenalin, when our body perceives a threat. These hormones can create changes in our body often called a fight or flight response. Calming down helps reduce these stress hormones.
Learning to have flexible thinking and the ability to regulate emotional changes in our body are important life skills that children need to learn and see modelled.
Encourage persistence when your child is trying to calm down. Praise the effort not just the success. This then ensures the child has the space to make mistakes, it encourages them that as long as they keep trying they are being successful.
Teaching our children calming down skills is crucial to empower them for life!
“Empowered for Life”; Jocelyne Chirnside

Around the classrooms – Prep:
In Prep this week we celebrated Harmony Day with a Puppet Show. The Larrikin Puppet Show experience was shared with Prep A, B, C and D. It was so much fun singing and dancing along with our visiting puppets.
The Puppet Show was all about showing and sharing KINDNESS. In Prep, we have been discovering how being kind and inclusive promotes harmonious learning and play experiences for EVERYONE!
As well in all the Prep classrooms our students have been exploring Nursery Rhymes and it was fun to make the connection, with the puppet show, to how we have been using stick puppets and stones to enjoy, explore and recite our favourite Nursery Rhymes!
With holidays coming up you might like to continue to explore some puppet play by making a simple sock puppet. Here is a fun video that shows in a really fun and simple way how you can turn a sock into a really cute and interactive puppet to play with! Take a look by clicking on the link below….

How to make Sock Puppets (fast and easy)
Interesting Fact to Finish- Did you know that Harmony Day was originally just an Australian celebration but it is now marked worldwide. Whether you want to be better friends with your classmates or stand in the shoes of another worldwide now we celebrate harmonious habits and unifying ideas to make Harmony Day a picture of kindness, belonging and peace!

Around the classrooms – Year 1:
This week Ironside has been celebrating Harmony Week!
We have been learning about what makes each of us different and special. In 1D we have written about the different things that make us special and painted a picture of ourselves to display. It has been wonderful to learn more about each other and celebrate our cultural diversity.

Around the classrooms – Year 2:
In Year 2 we have been investigating Earth’s natural resources, particularly water. Throughout the term we have learned about the water cycle, the ways in which we use water and how we can conserve water. We also participated in a virtual incursion with SEQ Water and had the chance to learn more about the water cycle and water treatment

NAPLAN
NAPLAN is done and dusted for another year. We are finalising our catch-up sessions this week for students who were absent. Thank you to all of the parents and carers who assisted in keeping everything normal for the students over the past two weeks. Your help was greatly appreciated.

Harmony Day in year 3
The class brought a plate of scrumptious foods originating from different cultures so we could feast together! It was a delightful time of sharing. We created a wall where we wrote what we were proud of and felt strong about. Our unity is in our strengths!

Bridge Builders – Calm body and Mind
Upset feelings are our body’s warning system that something is wrong. Not everybody feels the same about common situations. There is nothing wrong with having strong feelings. Our feelings are what make us unique. However, if we don’t learn to manage our feelings and think helpful, growth thoughts, then we can lose control of our choices and quickly find ourselves reacting to conflict or challenging situations in unhealthy ways that may hurt others or ourselves in the long term. Being able to calm our body and mind down is a sign of maturity and strength.
Tips to teach this skill at home:
- Help children to recognise what changes happen in their body when they get upset. These are a reminder of the need to start to use a calming down plan.
- After your child has been upset, discuss what they might have been thinking. Help them to reframe unhelpful thoughts into helpful thoughts; such as: • “I’m not going to lose my cool over this.” • “Is there another side to this problem?” • “I am ok.” etc.
- Practise calming down skills such as slow breathing, muscle relaxation and counting to distract their mind.
- Talk to your child about times you have to use these skills. Their greatest lessons are learnt not by what you say but what you do, so provide opportunities to see you calming down.

Religious Instruction
Religious Instruction has commenced for this year. This is an option available to all students in Years 1-6.
Faith groups who are offering RI at Ironside are:

Should you wish to change the RI group that your child attends, please submit this advice in writing to: pdave16@eq.edu.au AND adhil27@eq.edu.au It is possible to change groups/cease attendance at any time.
Kind regards,
Peter Davey

News from Chappy Thu
Dear Families,
Only TWO days to go until our Welcome Movie Night! The Chaplaincy Team & I have been working hard behind the scenes to make the night enjoyable for all. Thank you to all the volunteers who have volunteered to help so far. We expect 800+ tickets to be sold, so we certainly cannot hold an event such as this without the support of the incredible community we have here at Ironside! Thank you so much!
A few important things to take note of to keep the night running smoothly:
Please have your receipt ready on your phone or printed out. You can find it in the Activities section of the QKR! App. To print the order summary, you can either screen shot & print or email it to yourself by pressing the envelope icon in the top right corner of your screen. You will need to show this receipt for entry at the gate & to collect your food vouchers.

- Entry will ONLY be via Central Ave. All other gates will be locked.
- Prepaid tickets can enter through the oval driveway, directly only the oval. Please have your ticket receipt ready to show the volunteers on the way in
- If you need to purchase a ticket or you have lost your ticket, please enter up the stairs where there will be people available to help find your ticket on a Master List or sell you a ticket via Eftpos. Please no cash.
- A sample Food Voucher is shown below.
- Your child’s name & class will be at the top of the sheet.
- The vouchers will be arranged alphabetically via surname.
- Please find your voucher on the tables, show your receipt to the closest volunteer & they will hand you your voucher.
- Please tear off each square to exchange for your purchased item at the intended stall.
- Sausages can be collected under F Block (Library Block) & everything else will be under J Block.
- To keep things moving, if the line for a particular stall is too long, please try another line & come back. Please only have ONE family member collecting food to avoid long lines & crowds. Thank you 😊

- A Food Voucher Stall will be available in front of the archway stairs, just under F Block. Eftpos machines will be available for purchases. Please no cash. We will have extra portions of everything available, but stock is limited. We recommend pre ordering via QKR! to avoid disappointment.
- Please remember to bring chairs, picnic blankets, pillows & anything else you may need for a comfy outdoor movie experience on the oval.
- Gates open at 6pm for a 6:30pm start
See you Saturday!

Chappy Squad
Team Winter & Team Pickles represented the Squad for our last week & a half of regular activities for the term. They did a wonderful job of staying organised & focused on their duty as well as being kind & inclusive to all who came.
Special thanks to Rozhia, Shyah, Tingran, Saksham, Ilai, Rose, Heidi, Valentine, Ella, Ben, Jiho, Noah, Owen, Sherwin, Geoffrey, James, Avy, Alisa, Mariah, Avaya, Sara L, Kristy, Ella & Anna who all earned extra stars this fortnight. From taking initiative, learning & teaching new skills to being considerate & understanding to others, they truly were Ironside Stars at the activities!
The Squad is working towards getting 50 stamps/stars to receive a badge at assembly. Stamps are earned for completing roles & stars are earned for taking initiative & going above & beyond what was asked. Our current Top Members:

Chappy Activities
Regular Chappy Activities have come to an end this week as I prepare for Movie Night on Saturday. However, the last two weeks were filled with the usual fun…especially last week when I decided not to have a cap on activities since it was the last week…we had over 120 students at Origami Club!!! We barely finished our puppies & I didn’t manage to take any photos at all at the session so you’ll just have to take my word that the origami puppies were super cute 😊
We had special visitors at Paper Plane Club last week – a mummy possum AND baby possum! The students were wonderfully behaved & respectful of our native visitors. No one threw paper planes or sticks at them & they quietly chatted & observed them from below the trees.
Bubble Friday was the usual joy event & we even had a few new devices to blow bubbles with. The students thoroughly enjoying testing the new products! Special thank you to Sara L, Tingran, Valentine & Ella H for sharing bubbles with our preppies this fortnight. The four girls were an absolute delight & the prep students thoroughly enjoyed their company! Even through the St Patrick’s celebrations & dancing! What fun!
In Chappy Chat, we learned to play charades in a big group. It was wonderful to see even the very shy students have a go just before the bell went. So many creative interpretations of the words! I literally laughed out loud!
As mentioned, no activities this week (Week 9), but for Week 10, we will have a Chappy Squad party & an Easter Egg Hunt!

- Ironside Welcome Movie Night, Week 9. Tickets CLOSE tonight at midnight!
