Acknowledgement of Country

Ironside State School acknowledges the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects to the Elders past, present, and emerging for they hold the traditions, culture, memories and hopes of Indigenous Australia.

News from Mrs Kelly

Hi Everyone,

It was so fantastic having a School Review Team here this past week.  There is so much to love about Ironside State School and they enjoyed learning about these things but they also outlined some clear steps for us to potentially undertake as a school moving into the future.  I want to thank the School Review Team, we enjoyed the process, and they were such a great team to work with.

Thank you to those of you who could make the information sessions with your child’s teacher.  If you couldn’t make it, please do not panic, simply contact the school with any questions you might have.

Congratulations to all of those children who received Student of the Week awards on assembly in Week 2 and 3!!

COMING UP THIS FORNIGHT

  • Young National Leaders Day - Student Leaders: Monday 19 February
  • Religious Education Classes begin: Friday 23 February
  • Bridge Builders Mediation Training: Friday 23 February
  • Prep -  2  Merit Assembly STARS: Friday 23 February
  • School Council Meeting: Monday 26 February, 5:30pm in the staffroom
  • P&C AGM: Tuesday 27 February, 6pm in the staffroom
  • Year 3 Planetarium Excursion: Thursday 29th February
  • Year 3-6 Merit Assembly STARS: Friday 1 March
  • Student Leader Induction: Friday 1 March

We have a big couple of weeks coming up.  I am really curious about the Young National Leaders Day and what goes on at this.  I can’t wait to catch up with our leaders afterwards to find out the inner workings about Young National Leaders.  It is happening today and our Student Leadership Induction is also fast looming on Friday 1 March.  I look forward to working with our Student Leaders this year.

Two very important meetings are coming up and we want you there please!  Our first School Council meeting is on Monday 26 February at 5:30pm in the staffroom.  There are some positions to fill and we need you please.   The very next night is our first P&C AGM on Tuesday 27th February at 6:30pm in the staffroom and again, there will be positions to fill.  Please come along and support our school.  Being in a position on these committees is a way to understand and influence how your child’s school functions; it really is a great thing to be involved in your child's school.

I have been hearing the term ‘Bridge Builders ‘ across the school and this Friday, some children are receiving Mediation Training; this I need to see in action!

STAFF NEWS

I will finish with Staff News again this week.  We farewelled Ms Cathy Gordon, one of our amazing, dedicated fun teachers after 23 years at Ironside State School.  Ms Gordon has done so much for Ironside State School in her time here and we thank her and wish her all the very best on her new adventure.  We welcomed in her place Ms Helena Sillence onto our Year 1 cohort, we are so thrilled to have her.  I would like to also express our condolences to Ms Susan King whose mother recently passed away.  Ms King and Ms Jo Abell were taking a Year 3  class but need some personal time and so we now welcome to our team, Ms Danielle Rothwell.  Ms Rothwell has travelled all the way from South Africa and we are all very excited about her being here.

Have a safe and wonderful week everyone.

Yours in education,

Angie Kelly

Principal

News from Mr Weston-Murdoch

Dear parents and caregivers,

Bridge Builders - Skill of the week: Nature of conflict

Conflict can be defined as a problem, a disagreement or a fight.  It can be physical, verbal or indirect, with a reference to winning or losing.  Actions that present during conflict can be grouped into behaviours that hurt physically, and behaviours that hurt emotionally – hurting feelings and creating emotional pain.  The impetus for conflict may be deliberate, accidental or perceived but, predominately, conflict has its basis in unmet needs.

In classrooms, playgrounds, homes and sports fields, children are going to wrestle with the pain, discomfort and uncertainties related to conflict.  How they respond plays a part in determining their ability to grow into confident, respectful and problem-solving citizens.

“Empowered for Life”; Jocelyne Chirnside

At Ironside, we take a positive, solutions-focused approach and stay low on the ladder of inference.  In all interactions, please mindful of assumptions being made or getting caught up in emotions, particularly around the perspectives of younger children.

The best thing parents can do when conflict is reported at home is to apply an adult lens and filter the information: Step back, listen, investigate if necessary or see this as an opportunity for personal growth.

How we respond as adults and manage emotions in this space plays a critical role in developing and building a child’s resilience.

There are systems, structures and processes in place to support individuals and the general population, both academically and socially.  Your classroom teacher should be your first point of call. Conversations of this nature also need to remain between you and the classroom teacher. They are the people who know your children best and what has occurred during the day.

AROUND THE CLASSROOM - PREP:

In Prep, our English Inquiry Unit this term is based on Nursery Rhymes. We have been exploring a range of Nursery Rhymes including ‘Humpty Dumpty’, ‘Inanay’, ‘There’s Tiny Caterpillar’ and ‘Incy Wincy Spider’. We participated in representing retells through pictures and drawing. We verbally retold rhymes using the vocabulary ‘first, then, next and finally’. We discussed our opinions of the different Nursery Rhymes, reflecting on what we liked.

Here are some of our Incy Wincy Spider creations!

AROUND THE CLASSROOM: YEAR 1:

Year 1 has been very busy exploring significant events and celebrations! We have enjoyed sharing our own personal experiences and knowledge of special days such as birthdays, Christmas, Lunar New Year and Diwali. We are also practicing using time words to describe when these events occur and are looking forward to many celebrations in 2024.

AROUND THE CLASSROOM: YEAR 2:

If you have heard your child singing “The world is split up into continents” you are probably the parent of a Year 2 student! This term in HASS Year 2 students are learning about the continents, the equator and the north and south poles. Each week we visit a new continent and learn some interesting facts about that continent. We also investigate how communicating with people on other continents can be tricky and work out our direction of travel if we had to fly there from Australia. The highlight each week is certainly learning about famous landmarks on each continent. The students are showing great interest in HSS and are developing a better understanding of how big the world is and what we need or can do to stay connected to people on other continents.

If you get a chance google ‘the 7 continents song’ and sing along with your child! So far we have ventured into Asia, Africa and North America. Next stop …South America!

Kind regards,

Scott Weston-Murdoch

and the P-2 Team

News from Mrs Cowan-Dillon

Dear families,

YEAR 3

We’ve had a LOVE-ly week in 3F inquiring into symmetrical shapes and letters and using our understandings to create Valentine’s cards for our families. Our work forms part of Year 3’s research into celebrations this semester.

In English, we used our new learning about persuasive texts to write a letter home about why our families were so special. We hope everyone felt the love this Valentine’s Day.

YEAR 3 PLANETARIUM VISIT

On Wednesday 6 March, to complement their learning in Science, our Year 3 students will visit the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha.

*A note with more information will be coming home shortly.

In the meantime, each class will be looking for 3 parent helpers to assist on the day. If you are interested in joining your child’s class, please email your classroom teacher to let them know.

NAPLAN FOR YEAR 3

Key Dates:

  • Wednesday 13 March – Writing
  • Thursday 14 March – Reading
  • Friday 15 March – Conventions of Language
  • Tuesday 19 March – Numeracy

*The Writing test is handwritten and completed in test booklets; the remaining tests will be completed using iPads.

In class, students will work through practice modules with their classroom teachers in the lead up to NAPLAN.  The purpose of these practice tests is to familiarise students with accessing the platform using iPads and to troubleshoot any technical issues before the actual testing days.

3-6 MERIT CERTIFICATES

Congratulations to our Merit Certificate recipients from Week 2!

And from Week 4!

LIBRARY MONITORS - LIFE MEMBERS

Congratulations to our Library Monitors – four new life members!

Kind regards,

Alice Cowan-Dillon

Deputy Principal 3-4

News from Mr Perrier

WHAT A GREAT FORTNIGHT!! We are well and truly in the groove when it comes to our learning in the Upper School now. It’s such an exciting time of the term.

YEAR 5

Our Year 5’s are learning how to create persuasive writing pieces that will empower them to become self-advocates and active citizens. Some of the topics are amazing and from what I am hearing around the school, there could be some real-life changes actioned by this task. No spoilers yet, but watch this space 😊…….. Amazing work!

YEAR 6

Author style is the buzz around the Year 6 buildings. How writers use tone, mood, setting and characterisation to control the emotions of the audience is the key piece of work that students are engaged in. The depth of knowledge that is being shared throughout the cohort has set the students up for great success. If you have a favourite book or movie, share why you like it with your child and see what they’ve learnt. It’s a job well done!

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Congratulations to the following students for being successful in earning a leadership position in the school for 2024. It is with much pride that we welcome this amazing group of leaders to the proud tradition that is student leadership at Ironside. We look forward to seeing you all grow and develop through the year.

LIFE ED – SEXUAL HEALTH AND RELEATIONSHIPS EDUCATION

Our Life Education sessions for Year 5 and 6 students are continuing over the next fortnight. Hopefully this brilliant program has opened up the positive communication lines between students, teachers and parents as we help our older students negotiate their development into pre-teen and teenage life. The mature discussions I’ve been lucky to have with our Year 5 and 6 students have been great, and reflect the outstanding work by Rachel from Life Ed, and your child’s teacher, are doing. When we work as a team, we achieve so much more.

Have a lovely weekend!

Kind regards,

Brett Perrier

Deputy Principal 5-6

Student Sign Out Procedure

Dear Parents,

Please see new procedure for signing out students at Ironside State School below.

All contact requesting a student to be released early from class must be communicated directly with the office.

This can be in one of the three following ways:

  • In Person – By coming to the front office. (Office staff will contact the teacher via phone, or put an announcement out over our PA system)
  • Via Phone – 3258 3111
  • Via Email - absentstudents@ironsidess.eq.edu.au

Students can only be released from class once a parent is in the lobby of the front office.

This will allow the office staff to communicate with the teacher on that class that day and will ensure consistency around early student departures at Ironside.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation around this key piece regarding child safety.

Important Term 1 Dates

News from Chappy Thu

Dear Families,

How are you all feeling as we near the half way point of the term? Settled? Happy? Excited? Overwhelmed? Busy? All of the above?! Rest assured that you are not alone! My Work Plan for 2024 is due to the Department of Education by the end of Week 4 and I certainly have felt all the emotions as I tried to succinctly portray my plans for the year. As part of that process, I created a little visual of Chaplaincy Services…as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words!

If you would like to learn more about any of these services, or to get involved or volunteer, please do not hesitate to contact me. Email is my preferred channel, so please send all questions or comments to tklet0@eq.edu.au. Thank you!

CHAPPY SQUAD

The 2024 Chappy Squad members have enthusiastically been leading activities over the past fortnight, with some volunteering each day! I am so proud of all the members, both old and new who have shown great discipline in their work ethic as well as kindness in their interactions with the students who come to participate.

With so many members, I was thinking about how to store the badges to allow quick and efficient access. After sharing with my husband, he built me a new Squad Badge peg board as a gift! What a legend! It has made setting up activities infinitely easier and the students all love their new badges!

Special thanks to the following members for their outstanding contribution to the activities and school over the past two week:

  • James and Xavier for being so organised and dedicated to each of their roles over the past fortnight. You are both so welcoming to each student who comes to activities and I love all your ideas! I especially love James’s suggestion of a weekly team meeting to allow captains to encourage, guide and check in with their team.
  • Victoria, Alice, Isabella, Tanmeh, Kelly, Ella and Evie for going above and beyond the expected level of commitment. Thank you girls for being at every activity, stepping in whenever needed and even coming before school or after school to help! They are superstars!
  • Clara, Grace, Amy, Maya, Christopher, Evie, Luna, Jay Jun, Asher, Jimel, Lucrezia, Meeka, Esther, Athena, Thahirah and Tasnuva for effortlessly stepping into the Chappy Squad. As year 3s, this is their first time as full members and I was so impressed by their maturity and thoughtfulness as they took on roles for the first time. Well done!
  • Hafsa and Rose for the creative, gentle and inclusive way they run their activities, such as the drawing competition or origami challenge. Thank you for joining the Squad this year!

Here are the top members and teams as of Week 3:

CHAPPY ACTIVITIES

Chappy Activities were filled with laughter and new friendships over the past fortnight! In Origami Club, we made butterflies and foxes, with Ella and Lucrezia helping to fold over 30 between the two of them! At the lounge, we played new games, explored a pop up tent and were taught new dances by Victoria and Ann. At the Scavenger Hunt, we learnt new and interesting facts about Luna New Year and Valentine’s Day – congratulations to our winning team members, Tanmeh, Alice, Isabella, Victoria, Kelly, Ilai, Saksham, Thomas and Dom! Unfortunately, Bubble Friday has been cancelled two weeks in a row due to rain…but I am hopeful it will be back next week.

And that’s all from me for now. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Until Next Time,

Chappy Thu

FRIDAY INTERSCHOOL SPORT

Friday Interschool Sport will be coming up at the beginning of term 2 for our year 5 and 6 students.  Below you will find a link which will bring you to the sport selection form.  We ask that 3 choices be selected as it's not always possible to give every student their first choice logistically.  This year, there is a sport specific cost for each activity dependant on the number of participants, buses, venue costs, external providers, etc.  The estimated cost of each activity is listed on the form and in each selection drop down box.  The exact cost will be known once students are placed into their activities and participant numbers are known.

Please note that all year 5 and 6 students have been emailed this form earlier today, so please check with them to see if they have already filled it out and you are happy with their choices before filling out another form.

If you have any questions about Friday sport, please contact me at jclar577@eq.edu.au and I will be happy to answer them for you.

JUNIOR CHOIRS

Junior Choirs have started with much gusto! It is fantastic to see our littlest Ironside students so enthusiastic about being a member of the Choir and developing a love of performing.

By now, all parents of Year 1 and Year 2 Choir participants should have received an email from Mrs Huxley, confirming that your child is a member of the Choir and is attending a weekly rehearsal.

Please encourage your child to keep up with their attendance at rehearsals and encourage them to serenade you at home with their repertoire.

Year 2 Choir rehearsals are in the Music Room at first break on Tuesdays.

Year 1 Choir rehearsals are in the Music Room at first break on Wednesdays.

Message From OSHC: Update

Dear Families,

For the past 3 Terms we have been taking close review of the activities scheduled for each afternoon whilst children attend ASC.

After all permission forms being submitted for activities for Term 1 it has now become apparent that we can no longer accommodate in ensuring your children arrive to or from the scheduled activities within the time frames expected. For some time now we have had 2 educators employed every afternoon working from 2.30pm-5.30pm to ensure the following activities are being catered for every afternoon. Several families have 2 or more children enrolled in these activities, whilst some children are enrolled in up to 4 activities a week. This also makes it extremely difficult to know what to charge families for each Term regarding the activity that we currently charge. The current charges are no where near covering the cost of staffing over the Term. We are currently running at a loss of over $5,000 each Term to accommodate this as more and more activities are being booked.

These are the current list of daily/weekly activities we are trying to accommodate:

MONDAY

TUESDAY

Therefore, the following change to routine will take place at the commencement of Term 2 2024. We will only be accommodating drop off and pickups for the following activities:

1. Georgie Parkes Swim lessons Monday through to Friday

2. Penny Biddlestone Tennis lessons Monday through to Friday

These are the 2 activities that are the most popular and are quick and easily accessible to our educators. This will enable us to only have 1 educator rostered each day to accommodate the requirements of drop off and pick-ups. For all additional activities the host of the activity will be required to collect your child from our parent liaison person each afternoon. We are happy to walkie talkie and call for the child to be collected by the activity host and signed out then taken to the chosen activity, however they must return the child in person back to the parent liaison educator to be signed back in. We can only take responsibility and our duty of care is only in effect whilst your child is in our care.

You will still be required to complete the activity permission form so we can allow your child to be collected and taken to their activity by the host.

PLEASE ENSURE YOUR ACTIVTIY HOST IS HAPPY TO PICK UP AND DROP OFF YOUR CHILD TO AND FROM OSHC BEFORE BOOKING THEM INTO THE ACTIVITY AS WE WILL NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO ATTEND UNLESS THIS HAPPENS.

All families will still be required to complete the usual permission forms and the charge for Term 2 activities fee will now only be charged to those enrolled in Tennis or Swimming. The new fees for drop off and pick ups will be $25.00 per child for the Term. Any families with 3 or more children will be capped at a family price of $60.00. We apologise for any inconvenience however we need to do what we can to reduce these excess costs to the service.

Kind regards,

Natalie

The focus of the Hindu RI classes is to teach the children the values of Hindu Dharma, the Hindu gods and goddesses, and Hindu festivals through storytelling and celebrating festivals during the RI class. Through telling them stories from the Hindu Scriptures, the Hindu RI class aims to provide guidance to children about how to achieve their goals and grow up into proud and contributing Hindu Australians.

CATHOLIC RI

A variety of curricula can be used approved by the local parish priest or a bishop which usually go into some detail about Catholic religious tradition and practices rather than a general instruction on the Bible and basic Christian beliefs provided in a co-operative arrangement. Catholic belief is based on both Scripture and tradition.

Outline of Catholic RI’s Aims and Goals:

  • To help students
  • To know that we are all of mankind, that we all have a divine spirit within us and to know that God is within us all
  • To love God with all our heart and mind and soul
  • To love our neighbour, to show love, honour and respect to ourselves and to all around us
  • To forgive others and to treat others as we would like to be treated
  • To be familiar with the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes
  • To be informed about Catholic liturgical practices and religious services
  • To be familiar with basic Catholic beliefs and the fundamentals of Catholic religious doctrine
  • To become familiar with Scripture and the Person of Jesus Christ.
  • To know about special feast days associated with liturgical seasons of the year including Easter and Christmas
  • To become aware of and appreciate the Sacraments and Prayers of the Catholic Church

Students are invited to participate in the sacraments of Reconciliation and Confirmation.

Outline of lesson Structure:

Catholic IR lessons are based on the person of Jesus Christ and biblical teaching and may include bible stories and parables, drama, music, craft and prayer.

CHRISTIAN RI

The aim of Christian RI is to inform students about the basic beliefs of the Christian faith from a non-denominational perspective.

The providers of Christian RI use authorised program materials and resources and are committed to best-practice programs that have been reviewed by independent curriculum experts. The program GodSpace is used across Years 1-6 at Ironside SS and further information about GodSpace, including lesson structure can he found here . The independent review of GodSpace can be found here .

Participating faith groups: Local Christian Churches come together to offer Christian RI on a cooperative and non-denominational basis. These local churches may, amongst others, include Anglican, Australian Christian Churches, Baptist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Brisbane Chinese Alliance, Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches

Outline of lesson structure:

Christian RI may involve a variety of up-to-date teaching methods including storytelling, prayer, music, drama, craft, activity books, games, quizzes, video clips and puppet shows. Program resources are written by professional educators and are age-appropriate.

ISLAMIC RI

Outline of your Faith Group’s Aims and Goals

Our vision is for children to gain foundational knowledge and a practical understanding of Islamic values. Islam is a complete way of life that is centred around the concept of God-consciousness, as shown by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the final prophet and messenger sent by Allah (God).

We aim to develop students into happy, healthy and functional individuals who contribute to society based on the timeless wisdom from Islamic scripture and insights from the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his family and companions. As the modern age takes its toll on everyone through various stresses (economic, political, social, cultural), our program is tailored to help them manage and rise above the modern day struggles whilst ensuring they remain true to the core ethics of One God, his final Prophet, and the development of a tolerant, value-based society as encouraged by Islamic scripture.

Outline of lesson structure

Our modern pedagogical approach enables us to deliver a curriculum structured around the foundational areas (6 Pillars of Faith) of Islamic education, including:

Term 1: Back to Basics: 5 Pillars of Islam

Term 2: Who is Allah (SWT)?

Term 3: Guidance through the Prophet Stories

Term 4: Guidance from Allah

Understanding that actions are linked to beliefs. Faith must be accompanied by beneficial action. There is no rote-learning; instead, concepts are taught in a dynamic and engaging way that is relevant to the Australian context. Students are encouraged to ask questions as this shows they are processing the lessons and seeking a deeper understanding.

Alongside faith-based lessons are practical steps to develop life skills like time management, maintaining healthy relationships, and respectful communication. There is also a focus on morals and values that are the basis for a harmonious and socially cohesive society. Principles of fairness, equity, sharing, respect and understanding are core to each lesson, which resonates with all students regardless of how strongly they identify with the faith.

Please note: The order of topics is rotated every year; however, the concept remains the same. To stay up to date with our Term Assigned topic. Please feel free to explore our website: https://www.isre.org.au/resources/

BUDDHIST RI

Aims and Goals:

Our vision is for children to gain a foundation in Buddhist ethical values, being aware of the consequences of what they think, say and do. This will help them to develop skills that will benefit their personal lives and therefore also the wider community and society.

Our aim is for the children to lead happy and healthy lives by sharing values and life skills with them based on the wisdom of the Buddha and using contemporary pedagogy.  The children will not remember the contents of Buddhist text books, nor remember lists, but will understand the heart of Buddha’s wisdom to live well for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Outline of lesson structure:

We employ a modern pedagogical lesson planning structure, using a logical, step-by-step approach, taking into account the current level of understanding of the children. In other words, age-appropriate.
